Abu Sufyan bin Harith bin Abdul-Muttalib and Abdullah bin Abu Umaya had also met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Niq al-Uqab, between Mecca and Medina, and sought permission to enter his presence. Umm Salama spoke to him on their behalf and said, "Messenger of Allah, they are your cousin, your aunt's son, and your brother-in-law."He replied, "I have no need of them. As for my cousin, he attacked my honor, and as for my aunt's son, he is the one who said to me in Mecca what he said."When the news of this reached them, Abu Sufyan had with him a young son of his, and he said, "By Allah, he must grant me permission, or I will take this son of mine by the hand and we will wander the earth until we die of thirst and hunger."When this reached the Prophet ﷺ, he felt compassion for them and granted them permission. They entered his presence and embraced Islam. Abu Sufyan then recited the verses he had composed about his acceptance of Islam, apologizing for his past conduct,By your life, on the day I carried a banner so that the cavalry of al-Lat might defeat the cavalry of Muhammad,I was like one wandering bewildered in the dark, his night veiled in shadow, but now is my time of guidance, and I am rightly led.A guide other than my own self has guided me, and one whom I had driven away with every kind of expulsion has, with Allah's help, brought me back.I used to turn away and keep my distance from Muhammad with all my might, called by another name, though not claiming descent apart from Muhammad. They are the men they are, but whoever does not follow their whims, even if he holds sound opinion, they reproach and reject.I sought to please them, and I was not steadfast with the people unless I was guided to it in every gathering. So tell Thakeef I do not seek to fight them, and tell Thakeef it was someone else, or Adi.I was not in the army that struck down Amir, and neither my tongue nor my hand had any part in that wrong. They were tribes that came from distant lands, scattered groups that came from Siham and Sardad.Ibn Ishaq said, They claim that when he recited to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the line, "and one whom I had driven away with every kind of expulsion has, with Allah's help, brought me back," the Messenger of Allah struck him on the chest with his hand and said, "You drove me away with every kind of expulsion."

Reported by Hakim (3/43-44), and from him Bayhaqi in Dalail (5/27-28), from the hadith of Yunus bin Bukayr, from Ibn Ishaq, who said, Zuhri narrated to me, from Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utba, from Ibn Abbas, and he mentioned it. It is also found in Sirat bin Hisham (2/399-400) by this same route, at greater length.Hakim said, "Sahih according to the standard of Muslim, though the two of them did not include it. Abu Sufyan bin Harith was the foster brother of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for Halima nursed them both, and he was also his paternal cousin. Yet he treated the Prophet ﷺ with ugly conduct, and satirized him more than once, until Hassan bin Thabit answered him with his ode in which he says,'You satirized Muhammad, and I answered on his behalf, and with Allah lies the reward for that.'The hadith and the ode in full are recorded in the sahih hadith literature, may Allah have mercy on Muslim. Hassan bin Thabit used to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for permission to satirize him, but he would not grant it him." So ends the statement of Hakim.
