Abu Hurairah said, Delegations came to Muawiya during Ramadan, and we used to prepare food for one another. Abu Hurairah was among those who frequently invited us to his lodging, so I said, "Why don't I prepare some food and invite them to my lodging?" I ordered food to be prepared, then I met Abu Hurairah in the evening and said, "The invitation is at my place tonight."He said, "You've beaten me to it."I said, "Yes," and I invited them. Then Abu Hurairah said, "Shall I tell you a story from your own history, people of the Ansar?" Then he mentioned the conquest of Mecca and said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ advanced until he reached Mecca. He sent Zubayr in command of one of the two flanks, sent Khalid in command of the other flank, and sent Abu Ubayda in command of those without armor. They took the bottom of the valley, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in a battalion. He looked around and saw me."Abu Hurairah said, "I answered, 'At your service, Messenger of Allah!'"He said, "Let no one come to me except an Ansari." In the version of someone other than Shayban, he added, "Call out the Ansar for me." So they gathered around him.Quraysh had assembled a rabble of their followers and said, "Let us send these forward. If they gain anything, we will be with them, and if they are struck down, we will give what is asked of us."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do you see the rabble of Quraysh and their followers?" Then he gestured with his hands, one upon the other, and said, "Until you meet me at Safa."Abu Hurairah said, "So we set off, and not one of us wished to kill anyone but that he killed him, and not one of them directed anything against us. Then Abu Sufyan came and said, 'Messenger of Allah, the lifeblood of Quraysh has been laid bare. There is no Quraysh after this day.'"Then he said, "Whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan is safe."The Ansar said to one another, "As for this man, longing for his hometown has overtaken him, and tenderness for his clan."Abu Hurairah said, "Then revelation came, and when revelation came it was never hidden from us. When it came, no one would raise his eyes to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until the revelation was complete. When the revelation ended, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'People of the Ansar!'"They said, "At your service, Messenger of Allah!"He said, "You said, 'As for this man, longing for his hometown has overtaken him.'"They said, "That is what was said."He said, "By no means! I am the slave of Allah and His Messenger. I have migrated to Allah and to you. My life is your life, and my death is your death."They came toward him weeping and saying, "By Allah, we said what we said only out of attachment to Allah and His Messenger."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah and His Messenger believe you and accept your excuse."Abu Hurairah said, "The people headed to the house of Abu Sufyan, and the people closed their doors. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came forward until he approached the Black Stone and touched it, then he circumambulated the House. He came upon an idol beside the House which they used to worship. In the hand of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was a bow, and he was holding it by its curved tip. When he reached the idol, he began jabbing it in the eye, saying, 'Truth has come and falsehood has perished.' When he finished his circumambulation, he came to Safa and ascended it until he could see the House. He raised his hands and began praising Allah and supplicating with whatever he wished to supplicate."In another wording, he said, "Then what is my name? By no means! I am the slave of Allah and His Messenger."
