When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out in the year of the Conquest and word of this reached Quraysh, Abu Sufyan bin Harb, Hakeem bin Hizam, and Budayl bin Warqa went out seeking news of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They traveled on until they reached Marr al-Zahran, where they suddenly saw fires that resembled the fires of Arafah.Abu Sufyan asked, "What are these? They look like the fires of Arafah."Budayl bin Warqa replied, "These are the fires of Banu Amr."Abu Sufyan said, "Amr are fewer than that."Some men from the guard of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spotted them, caught up with them, seized them, and brought them to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Abu Sufyan accepted Islam. When the army moved forward, the Prophet ﷺ said to Abbas, "Hold Abu Sufyan back at the narrow pass of the mountain so that he may look upon the Muslims."So Abbas held him there, and the tribes began passing by with the Prophet ﷺ, company after company, in front of Abu Sufyan. A company passed by, and he asked, "Abbas, who are these?"Abbas replied, "These are Ghifar."Abu Sufyan said, "What have I to do with Ghifar?"Then Juhaynah passed by, and he said the same. Then Saad bin Hudhaym passed by, and he said the same. Then Sulaym passed by, and he said the same. Finally a company came forward the like of which he had never seen.He asked, "Who are these?"Abbas said, "These are the Ansar, with Saad bin Ubada at their head, carrying the banner."Saad bin Ubada called out, "Abu Sufyan, today is the day of slaughter. Today the Kaabah will be made lawful."Abu Sufyan said, "Abbas, what a fine day was the day of al-Nimar."Then another company came, the smallest of them all, in which were the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions. The banner of the Prophet ﷺ was with Zubayr bin Awwam. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by Abu Sufyan, Abu Sufyan said, "Do you know what Saad bin Ubada said?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What did he say?"Abu Sufyan repeated his words. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Saad has spoken falsely. Rather, this is a day on which Allah will magnify the Kaabah, a day on which the Kaabah will be draped with a covering."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that his banner be planted at al-Hajun.Urwa said, Nafi bin Jubayr bin Mutim informed me, saying, "I heard Abbas saying to Zubayr bin Awwam, 'Abu Abdullah, is this where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded you to plant the banner?'"On that day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered Khalid bin Walid to enter from the upper part of Mecca through Kada, while the Prophet ﷺ himself entered through Kuda. Two men from Khalid's cavalry were killed that day, Hubaysh bin al-Ashar and Kurz bin Jabir al-Fihri.
Except for his saying, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered Khalid bin Walid that day to enter from the upper part of Makkah, through Kadaa, while the Prophet ﷺ entered through Kada." This is shadh (anomalous). Bukhari related it in the Book of Military Expeditions (4280) from Ubaydullah bin Ismail, who said, Abu Usama narrated to us, from Hisham, from his father (that is, Urwa bin Zubayr), who said, and then he mentioned it.The form of the hadith is mursal, though it becomes connected at its end, and the error originates from Urwa's teacher. This is because Urwa himself related, from Ayesha, that the Prophet ﷺ entered from the upper part of Makkah, as will be mentioned later, and the sahih narrations state that Khalid bin Walid entered from the lower part of Makkah.
