Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then set out, having appointed Abu Ruhm Kulthum bin Husayn al-Ghifari to oversee Madina in his absence. He departed on the tenth night of Ramadan. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fasted, and the people fasted with him, until he reached al-Kadid, between Usfan and Amaj, where he broke his fast. He then continued until he camped at Marr al-Zahran with ten thousand Muslims from Mazina, Sulaym, and other tribes, all of whom had numbers and had embraced Islam. The Muhajirun and the Ansar all joined the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, not one of them stayed behind. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ camped at Marr al-Zahran while news had been kept hidden from Quraysh. No information about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached them, nor did they know what he intended to do. During those nights, Abu Sufyan bin Harb, Hakeem bin Hizam, and Budayl bin Warqa went out searching and looking, hoping to find some news or hear something.Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib had met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ along the way. Abu Sufyan bin Harith bin Abdul-Muttalib and Abdullah bin Abu Umaya bin Mughira had also met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ somewhere between Mecca and Madina and sought permission to enter his presence. Umm Salama spoke to him on their behalf, saying, "Messenger of Allah, your cousin, your aunt's son, and your in-law."He replied, "I have no need of either of them. As for my cousin, he tore my honor to shreds, and as for my aunt's son and in-law, he is the one who said to me in Mecca what he said."When this was conveyed to them, and Abu Sufyan had a young son with him, he said, "By Allah, he must grant me permission, or I shall take this son of mine by the hand and we shall wander the earth until we die of hunger and thirst."When word of this reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he felt compassion for them and granted them permission. They came in and embraced Islam. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ camped at Marr al-Zahran, Abbas said, "Alas for Quraysh in the morning! By Allah, if the Messenger of Allah ﷺ enters Mecca by force before they seek his protection, it will be the destruction of Quraysh forever."Abbas continued, "So I mounted the white mule of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and rode out on it until I came to the Arak trees. I thought to myself, perhaps I will meet some woodcutter, milk-seller, or someone with business going to Mecca who can inform them of the location of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so they may come out to him and seek his protection before he enters upon them by force.By Allah, I was riding along seeking what I had come for when I heard the voice of Abu Sufyan speaking to Budayl bin Warqa as they conversed back and forth. Abu Sufyan was saying, 'I have never seen so many fires nor such an army as tonight.'Budayl said, 'By Allah, these are the fires of Khuza, kindled by war.'Abu Sufyan said, 'By Allah, Khuza is too lowly and contemptible for these to be their fires and their army.'I recognized his voice, so I called out, 'Abu Hanzala!'He recognized my voice and said, 'Abu Fadl?'I said, 'Yes.'He said, 'What is the matter, may my father and mother be ransomed for you?'I said, 'Woe to you, Abu Sufyan! This is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the people. Alas for Quraysh in the morning, by Allah!'He said, 'What is to be done, may my father and mother be ransomed for you?'I said, 'By Allah, if he gets hold of you, he will strike off your head. So mount this mule behind me and I will take you to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to seek protection for you.'He mounted behind me, and his two companions turned back. I urged the mule on, and whenever I passed one of the fires of the Muslims, they would say, 'Who is this?' But when they saw the mule of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they would say, 'The uncle of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on his mule.' Until I passed by the fire of Umar bin Khattab. He said, 'Who is this?' and stood up to me. When he saw Abu Sufyan on the back of the animal, he said, 'Abu Sufyan, the enemy of Allah! Praise be to Allah who has given us power over you without any pact or covenant.' Then he set off running toward the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I drove the mule on. The mule outpaced him as a slow animal outpaces a slow man. I sprang off the mule and went in to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Umar came in.Umar said, 'Messenger of Allah, this is Abu Sufyan. Allah has given us power over him without any pact or covenant. Let me strike off his neck.'I said, 'Messenger of Allah, I have granted him protection.' Then I sat down beside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, took hold of his head, and said, 'No, by Allah, no man shall speak to him in private tonight without me.'When Umar persisted regarding him, I said, 'Easy, Umar! By Allah, were he one of the men of Banu Adi bin Kaab, you would not be saying this. But you know he is a man of Banu Abd Manaf.'Umar said, 'Easy, Abbas! By Allah, your acceptance of Islam on the day you embraced it was dearer to me than the acceptance of Khattab would have been had he embraced it. The only reason is that I knew your acceptance of Islam was dearer to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ than the acceptance of Khattab would have been.'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Take him to your quarters, Abbas, and when morning comes, bring him back to me.'So I took him to my quarters and he spent the night with me. When morning came, I brought him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When the Prophet ﷺ saw him, he said, 'Woe to you, Abu Sufyan! Has the time not come for you to know that there is no god but Allah?'Abu Sufyan replied, 'May my father and mother be ransomed for you. How forbearing, generous, and kind to kin you are! By Allah, I had thought that if there had been any god alongside Allah, he would have availed me something.'The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Woe to you, Abu Sufyan! Has the time not come for you to know that I am the Messenger of Allah?'He replied, 'May my father and mother be ransomed for you. How forbearing, noble, and kind to kin you are! By Allah, regarding this, there has been something in my heart until now.'Abbas said, 'Woe to you, Abu Sufyan! Embrace Islam and bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, before your neck is struck off.'So he bore witness with the testimony of truth and embraced Islam.I said, 'Messenger of Allah, Abu Sufyan is a man who loves honor, so grant him something.'He said, 'Yes. Whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan is safe, whoever shuts his door is safe, and whoever enters the Mosque is safe.'When Abu Sufyan turned to leave, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Abbas, hold him at the narrow part of the valley by the projection of the mountain so that the armies of Allah may pass by him and he may see them.'So I went out with him and held him where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had commanded me. The tribes passed by with their banners. Whenever a tribe passed, he would say, 'Abbas, who are these?' I would say, 'Sulaym.' He would say, 'What have I to do with Sulaym?' Then another tribe would pass and he would say, 'Abbas, who are these?' I would say, 'Mazina.' He would say, 'What have I to do with Mazina?' Until all the tribes had gone by. No tribe passed but he asked, 'Who are these?' and I would say, 'Banu so-and-so,' and he would say, 'What have I to do with Banu so-and-so?'Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed in his green-clad battalion, in which were the Muhajirun and the Ansar, of whom only the eyes could be seen.Abu Sufyan said, 'Glory be to Allah! Abbas, who are these?'I said, 'This is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ among the Muhajirun and the Ansar.'He said, 'No one has the power or strength to face these. By Allah, Abu Fadl, the kingdom of your nephew has become great this morning!'I said, 'Abu Sufyan, it is prophethood.'He said, 'Then yes, indeed.'I said, 'Hurry to your people!'When he reached them, he shouted at the top of his voice, 'People of Quraysh! This is Muhammad who has come upon you with what you cannot withstand. Whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan is safe.'His wife Hind bint Utba rose up to him, seized him by his moustache, and cried, 'Kill this fat, greasy weakling! What a wretched advance scout for a people!'He said, 'Woe to you, do not let this woman deceive you about yourselves. There has come upon you what you cannot withstand. Whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan is safe.'They said, 'Woe to you! What good will your house do?'He said, 'And whoever shuts his door is safe, and whoever enters the Mosque is safe.'So the people scattered to their houses and to the Mosque.
