Bara bin Azib reported,

When the Prophet ﷺ set out for the lesser pilgrimage in the month of Dhul-Qadah, the people of Mecca refused to allow him to enter the city, until they negotiated a settlement with him that he could stay in Mecca for three days. When they were drafting the document, the Muslims wrote, "These are the terms agreed upon by Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."The Meccans objected, "We do not accept this. Had we known you were the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we would not have prevented you from anything. Rather, you are Muhammad bin Abdullah."He replied, "I am the Messenger of Allah, and I am Muhammad bin Abdullah."Then he said to Ali, "Erase the words 'Messenger of Allah.'"Ali said, "No, by Allah, I will never erase your name."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took the document himself, though he could not write well, and he wrote, "These are the terms agreed upon by Muhammad bin Abdullah. No weapons are to be brought into Mecca except a sword in its sheath. He shall not take with him any of the inhabitants of Mecca who wish to follow him, nor shall he prevent any of his own companions from remaining in Mecca if they wish to do so."When he entered Mecca and the agreed period had passed, the Meccans came to Ali and said, "Tell your companion to leave us, for the term has expired."So the Prophet ﷺ departed, and the daughter of Hamza followed him, calling out, "Uncle, uncle!"Ali reached out and took her by the hand, and said to Fatimah, "Take your cousin and carry her along."Then Ali, Zayd, and Jafar disputed over her custody.Ali said, "I took her, and she is my cousin."Jafar said, "She is my cousin, and her maternal aunt is my wife."Zayd said, "She is my brother's daughter."The Prophet ﷺ ruled that she should be given to her maternal aunt, saying, "The maternal aunt holds the status of a mother."He said to Ali, "You are from me and I am from you."He said to Jafar, "You resemble me in appearance and in character."He said to Zayd, "You are our brother and our freed servant."Ali asked, "Will you not marry the daughter of Hamza?"He replied, "She is the daughter of my brother through breastfeeding."
