Alqama bin Mujazziz was sent on a military expedition, and I was among the troops. When he reached the destination of our campaign, or was somewhere along the way, he gave permission for a portion of the army to return, and he placed Abdullah bin Huzafa bin Qays al-Sahmi in command over them. He was one of the companions of Badr, and he had a playful streak, meaning he liked to joke. I was among those who returned with him.We stopped at some point along the way, and the men kindled a fire to prepare some food for themselves, or to warm themselves by it.Abdullah bin Huzafa said to them, "Do I not have the right to be heard and obeyed by you?"They replied, "Yes."He said, "Whatever I command you to do, will you not do it?"They answered, "Yes."He said, "I order you, by my right over you and your duty to obey me, to jump into this fire."Some of the men stood up and tucked their garments, and when he saw they were about to leap in, he said, "Hold yourselves back. I was only joking with you."When they returned, they mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever among them commands you to disobey Allah, do not obey him."
Ibn Majah (2863) and Ahmad (11639) narrated it, and Ibn Hibban (4558) and Hakim (3/630–631) graded it sahih, all of them from the hadith of Muhammad bin Amr bin Alqama, from Umar bin Hakam bin Thawban, from Abu Saeed Khudri, who mentioned it. The wording is Ahmad's. Its chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Amr bin Alqama and Umar bin Hakam bin Thawban, for both of them make the hadith hasan, and Busiri graded its chain sahih in Misbah Zujaja.
