On the day of Khaybar, a group of the Prophet's ﷺ companions came forward saying, "So-and-so is a martyr, so-and-so is a martyr," until they passed by a man and said, "So-and-so is a martyr."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Not at all. I have seen him in the Fire because of a cloak he stole," or "a garment."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Son of al-Khattab, go and announce to the people that none shall enter Paradise except the believers."He said, So I went out and called, "None shall enter Paradise except the believers."
Narrated by Muslim in the Book of Faith (114), from Zuhayr bin Harb, who said, Hashim bin Qasim narrated to us, Ikrima bin Ammar narrated to us, who said, Simak Hanafi Abu Zumayl narrated to me, who said, Abdullah bin Abbas narrated to me, who said, Umar bin Khattab narrated to me, and he mentioned something similar.Waqidi said, The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arranged his companions for battle and organized their ranks. He gave his banner to Saad bin Ubada, a standard to Hubab bin Mundhir, a standard to Sahl bin Hunayf, and a standard to Abbad bin Bishr. Then he called them to Islam and informed them that if they accepted Islam, their property would be preserved and their blood protected, and their reckoning would be with Allah. He said, Then a man came forward from among them, and Zubayr bin Awwam came forward against him and killed him. Then another came forward, and Ali came forward against him and killed him. Then another came forward, and Abu Dujana came forward against him and killed him, until eleven men of them had been killed. Every time a man of them was killed, he would call those who remained to Islam. The time for prayer would come during that day, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would pray with his companions, then return to calling them to Islam and to Allah and His Messenger. He fought them until evening fell, and returned to them the next morning. Before the sun had risen the height of a spear, they surrendered themselves, and he conquered it by force. Allah granted him their wealth as spoils, and they seized much furniture and goods. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed at Wadi Qura for four days, dividing what had been taken among his companions, and left the land and the palm groves in the hands of the Jews, employing them to work it. When the Jews of Tayma learned of what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had done at Khaybar, Fadak, and Wadi Qura, they made peace with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the basis of jizya, and kept their property in their own hands. Then when Umar came to power, he expelled the Jews of Khaybar and Fadak, but did not expel the people of Tayma and Wadi Qura, because those two places were part of the land of Syria. He held the view that whatever lies this side of Wadi Qura toward Madinah is Hijaz, and whatever lies beyond that is Syria. He said, Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set off returning to Madinah after he had finished with Khaybar and Wadi Qura, and Allah
had granted him spoils there.Maghazi of Waqidi (2/710–713).
