Ati reported that the Prophet ﷺ used to be guarded by his companions. One night I got up and did not find him in his sleeping place, so I was overcome with worry about what had happened. I went out to look for him, and there I found Muaz, who had experienced the same as I had. Then we heard a sound like the humming of a millstone, so we stood still where we were. The Prophet ﷺ came toward us from the direction of the sound and said, "Do you know where I was and what I was doing? Someone came to me from my Lord and gave me the choice between half of my nation entering Paradise or intercession, and I chose intercession."They said, "Messenger of Allah, ask Allah
to include us in your intercession."He replied, "You and whoever dies without associating anything with Allah are included in my intercession."
Ahmad narrated it (19618) from Affan, "Hammad, meaning Ibn Salama, narrated to us, Asim informed us, from Abu Burda, from Abu Musa," and he mentioned it. Its isnad is hasan because of Asim, who is Ibn Abu Najud, for his narrations are hasan.Haythami attributed it in Majmaa (10/368-369) to Ahmad and Tabarani, and regarding Ahmad's narration he said, "Their narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Asim bin Abu Najud, who has been deemed trustworthy, though there is some weakness in him."Hamza bin Ali Mukhaffar also narrated it, from Abu Burda, from Abu Musa, who said, "We went out on a military expedition with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on one of his journeys." He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made a night halt with us, and part of the night I went to the camping place of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ looking for him, but I did not find him." He said, "So I went out into the open looking for him, and there was a man from among the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ looking for the same thing I was looking for."He said, "While we were like that, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned toward us." He said, "So we said, 'O Messenger of Allah, you are in enemy territory and we do not feel safe about you. When the need arose, why did you not tell one of your companions to rise and go with you?'"He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I heard a rustling sound like the rustling of a millstone, or a humming like the humming of bees, and someone came to me from my Lord .'" He said, "'He gave me the choice between a third of my nation entering Paradise or intercession for them, so I chose intercession for them, knowing that it would be more encompassing for them. Then he gave me the choice between half of my nation entering Paradise or intercession for them, so I chose intercession for them, knowing that it would be more encompassing for them.'"So the two of them said, "O Messenger of Allah, ask Allah Almighty to make us among the people of your intercession." He said, "So he prayed for them." Then the two of them woke up the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told them what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said. He said, "So they began coming to him, saying, 'O Messenger of Allah, ask Allah Almighty to make us among the people of your intercession,' and he would pray for them." He said, "When the people pressed insistently upon him and grew numerous, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'It is for whoever dies bearing witness that there is no god but Allah.'"Imam Ahmad narrated it (19724) from Hasan bin Musa, meaning Ashayb, who said, "Sakeen bin Abdul-Aziz narrated to us, who said, 'Yazid Araj informed us'" (Abdullah said, "meaning, I think he is Shanni") "who said, 'Hamza bin Ali bin Mukhaffar narrated to us, from Abu Burda, from Abu Musa,'" and he mentioned it.Hamza bin Ali bin Mukhaffar is among the narrators mentioned in Tajil, and he is unknown (majhul), as the author noted, except that he has been corroborated, and some of its passages have sahih corroborating evidence, as has already been shown. On this subject there is also a hadith from Ibn Umar, marfu, "I was given the choice between intercession, or half of intercession, or half of my nation entering Paradise, so I chose intercession, for it is more comprehensive and more sufficient. Do you think it is for the pure? No, rather it is for the sinful wrongdoers." Ziyad said, "Indeed it contains a grammatical error, but this is how the one who narrated it to us narrated it."Imam Ahmad narrated it (5452), "Mamar bin Sulayman Abu Abdullah narrated to us, Ziyad bin Khaythama narrated to us, from Ali bin Numan bin Qarad, from a man, from Abdullah bin Umar," and he mentioned it.Ali bin Numan bin Qarad had no one narrate from him except Ziyad bin Khaythama, so he is unknown (majhul), even though Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators, following his usual practice of listing unknown narrators, and Haythami relied on this in Majmaa (1/378), deeming him trustworthy, while his own teacher is unspecified and unknown. This hadith has also been narrated from Abu Musa Ashari. Ibn Majah narrated it (4311) through another route, from Ziyad bin Khaythama, from Naeem bin Abu Hind, from Rubai bin Khirash, from Abu Musa Ashari, and in it, "Do you think it is for the pure? No, rather it is for the sinful, wrongdoing, tainted ones."And in another narration, from Rubai, from the Prophet ﷺ, as a mursal report.Daraqutni mentioned this hadith in his book Ilal, and Ibn Jawzi quoted, in Ilal Mutanahiya (2/438), Daraqutni's statement, "There is nothing sahih among these hadiths." So whoever failed to notice the inconsistency occurring in this hadith graded it sahih. His statement, "for the munaqqin," is derived from "tanqiya" (purification), meaning for those cleansed of sins.
