I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was at Khaybar after they had conquered it, and I said, "Messenger of Allah, allot me a share."One of the sons of Saeed bin As said, "Do not allot him a share, Messenger of Allah."Abu Hurairah said, "This is the killer of Ibn Qawqal."Ibn Saeed bin As said, "How astonishing! A little rock-badger coming down from the peak of Daan reproaches me for killing a Muslim man whom Allah honored at my hands and did not disgrace me at his hands."The narrator said, "I do not know whether he allotted him a share or not."
Bukhari narrated it in the chapters on jihad and expeditions (2827), from Humaydi, from Sufyan, from Zuhri, who said, Anbasah bin Saeed told me, on the authority of Abu Hurairah, who said, then he related it."Ibn Qawqal" was Numan bin Malik bin Thalaba, Qawqal being a nickname of Thalaba. He was martyred on the day of Uhud."Some of the sons of Saeed bin As" refers to Aban bin Saeed. His saying, "A wabr came down upon us from the edge of Dan" - the wabr is a small wild creature resembling a cat. Aban meant by this to belittle Abu Hurairah. "Came down" seems to mean, "He suddenly attacked us." "The edge of Dan" means the tip or border of Dan. As for the word for sheep here, it is said to mean the top of a mountain, since such heights are generally where sheep are grazed. It is also said that, without the glottal stop, it refers to Dan, a mountain belonging to Daws, the tribe of Abu Hurairah. In another narration it appears with a lam instead of the nun, as "Dal," meaning the wild jujube tree. His saying, "Allah honored him at my hand..." means that Numan bin Malik bin Qawqal was martyred at the hand of Aban, so Allah honored him with martyrdom. Aban was not killed while still in disbelief, which would have meant entering the Fire, and that is what is meant by disgrace. Rather, Aban lived on until he repented and became Muslim. His saying, "I do not know whether he was given a share or not" - the speaker here is Ibn Uyayna.
