Ayesha reported,

Fatimah, the daughter of the Prophet ﷺ, sent word to Abu Bakr asking him for her inheritance from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from what Allah had granted him as fay in Madinah and Fadak, and what remained of the fifth of Khaybar.Abu Bakr replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'We are not inherited from. Whatever we leave behind is charity. The family of Muhammad ﷺ eats only from this wealth.' By Allah, I will not change anything of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ charity from the state it was in during his lifetime, and I will administer it as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did."Abu Bakr refused to give Fatimah any part of it. Fatimah became displeased with Abu Bakr over this and avoided him, not speaking to him until she died. She lived for six months after the Prophet ﷺ. When she died, her husband Ali buried her at night without informing Abu Bakr, then Ali performed the funeral prayer over her.During Fatimah's life, Ali enjoyed a certain standing among the people, but when she died, he sensed a change in their attitude toward him. So he sought reconciliation with Abu Bakr and to give him the pledge of allegiance, having not yet pledged during those months. He sent word to Abu Bakr saying, "Come to us, but let no one come with you," disliking the presence of Umar.Umar said, "By Allah, you will not go to them alone."Abu Bakr said, "What could they possibly do to me? By Allah, I will go to them."So Abu Bakr went to them. Ali gave the testimony of faith and then said, "We acknowledge your virtue and what Allah has given you. We have not begrudged you any good that Allah has driven your way. But you acted unilaterally in this matter, and we felt that we had a share in it through our kinship to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Abu Bakr's eyes filled with tears. When he spoke, he said, "By the One in whose hand my soul is, the kinship of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is dearer to me than my own kin to maintain. As for the disagreement that arose between me and you regarding this wealth, I have not fallen short of doing what is right concerning it, and I have not abandoned any practice that I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do with it without doing the same."Ali said to Abu Bakr, "Your appointment with me for the pledge will be this afternoon."When Abu Bakr finished the noon prayer, he ascended the pulpit, gave the testimony of faith, and mentioned Ali's situation, his delay in giving the pledge, and the reason he had offered. Then he asked Allah's forgiveness.Ali then gave the testimony of faith and acknowledged the great right of Abu Bakr. He stated that what had moved him to act as he did was not envy of Abu Bakr nor denial of the virtue Allah had bestowed upon him, "but we believed that we had a share in this matter, and he acted unilaterally regarding us, so we felt aggrieved within ourselves."The Muslims were pleased by this and said, "You have done right." The Muslims drew close to Ali again when he returned to the proper course.
