On the day of al-Harra, when the people were pledging allegiance to Abdullah bin Hanzala, Ibn Zayd asked, "On what basis is Ibn Hanzala taking the people's pledge?"He was told, "On death."He said, "I will not give such a pledge to anyone after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He had been present with him at al-Hudaybiyyah.
قال لما كان يوم الحرة- والناس يبايعون لعبد الله بن حنظلة- فقال ابن زيد: على ما يبايع ابن حنظلة الناس؟ قيل له: على الموت. قال: لا أبايع على ذلك أحدا بعد رسول الله ﷺ وكان شهد معه الحديبية.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Military Expeditions (4167), and Muslim in the Book of Leadership (81:1861), both through the route of Amr bin Yahya, from Abbad bin Tamim, who said, and then he mentioned it. The wording given is Bukhari's. The companion Ibn Zayd is Abdullah bin Zayd bin Asim, the paternal uncle of Abbad bin Tamim. His words, "When the day of Harrah came," mean when the people of Madinah renounced their allegiance to Yazid bin Muawiya and pledged allegiance to Abdullah bin Hanzala Ansari.
