I had been captivated by one of the views held by the Khawarij, so we set out, a sizable band of us, intending to perform the pilgrimage and then to rise up against the people. We passed through Madinah, and there was Jabir bin Abdullah, seated against a pillar, telling the people about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He happened to mention those who would be brought out of Hell.I said to him, "Companion of the Messenger of Allah, what is this that you people are saying? Allah says, 'Whoever You admit to the Fire, You have surely disgraced him, and the wrongdoers will have no helpers' [Al Imran 3:192], and He says, 'As for those who transgressed, their refuge is the Fire. Every time they wish to leave it they are returned to it, and it is said to them, taste the punishment of the Fire which you used to deny' [Sajdah 32:20]. So what is this that you are claiming?"Jabir replied, "Do you recite the Quran?"I said, "Yes."He asked, "Then have you heard of the station of Muhammad ?" meaning the station to which Allah will raise him.I said, "Yes."He said, "That is the praised station of Muhammad ﷺ, through which Allah will bring out whomever He brings out."Then he described how the bridge would be set in place and how people would pass over it. I am afraid I cannot recall all of that accurately. But he did maintain that a group of people would come out of the Fire after having been in it. He said they would emerge looking like charred sesame stalks, then they would enter one of the rivers of Paradise and wash in it, and they would come out looking like sheets of white paper. So we left, and we said to one another, "Woe to you! Do you really think this old man would lie about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"We turned back, and by Allah, not one of us went out in revolt except a single man.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Faith (191:320), from Hajjaj bin Shayr, who said, Fadl bin Dukayn told us, who said, Abu Asim, meaning Muhammad bin Abu Ayub, told us, who said, Yazid al-Faqir told me, and he then related it.Regarding his name "al-Faqir," it is spelled with a fa followed by a qaf, on the pattern of the word "azim." It was a nickname given to him because he used to complain about the vertebrae of his back, not because it meant the opposite of "wealthy."
