We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until we reached Usfan. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to us, "The scouts of Quraysh are now at Dajnan. Which of you knows the route through Dhat al-Hanzal?"When evening came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Is there a man who will dismount and walk ahead of the riders?"A man said, "I will, Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He dismounted, but the stones began to bruise him and the branches caught at his clothes. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Mount up."Then another man dismounted, and the stones began to bruise him and the branches caught at his clothes. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Mount up."Then we came upon the road and traveled through a mountain pass called al-Hanzal. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "This pass is just like the gate that the Children of Israil were ordered to enter, when they were told, 'Enter the gate prostrating and say, Relieve us of our burdens, and We shall forgive you your sins' [Baqarah 2:58]. No one will pass through this pass tonight except that he will be forgiven."The people began hurrying through and passing along, and the last to pass was Qatada bin Numan at the rear of the company. The people began to crowd upon one another until we all caught up. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dismounted, and we dismounted with him.
Bazzar narrated it in Kashf Astar (1812) from Ishaq bin Bahlul Anbari, who said, Muhammad bin Ismail bin Abu Fudayk narrated to us, who said, Hisham bin Saad narrated to us, from Zayd bin Aslam, from Ata bin Yasar, from Abu Saeed, and he mentioned it.Bazzar said, "We do not know of anyone who narrated it this way except Muhammad bin Ismail."I say, Muhammad bin Ismail bin Abu Fudayk, with the fa in diminutive form. Ibn Main deemed him trustworthy. Nasai said, "There is no harm in him," so his being the sole narrator does not weaken the hadith, and he is in a better position than his teacher Hisham bin Saad, for there is also disagreement about him, except that his hadith is hasan when he does not contradict others, and nothing objectionable has come from him.Haythami said in Majma (6/144), "Its narrators are trustworthy."
