When the Prophet ﷺ ordered the trench to be dug, a boulder blocked their way and stopped the digging. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up, took the pickaxe, laid his cloak aside at the edge of the trench, and said, "And the word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and justice. None can change His words, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing" [Anam 6:115]. A third of the rock broke away. Salman Farsi was standing there watching, and with the Messenger of Allah's blow there flashed a burst of light. Then he struck a second time and said, "And the word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and justice. None can change His words, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing" [Anam 6:115]. Another third broke away, and again a flash of light shone out, and Salman saw it.Then he struck a third time and said, "And the word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and justice. None can change His words, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing" [Anam 6:115]. The remaining third broke away. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then climbed out, took his cloak, and sat down.Salman said, "Messenger of Allah, I watched you as you struck, and every single blow was accompanied by a flash of light."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Salman, you saw that?"Salman replied, "Yes, by the One who sent you with the truth, Messenger of Allah."He said, "When I struck the first blow, the cities of Chosroes and what lies around them, and many other cities, were raised up for me until I saw them with my own eyes."Those of his companions who were present said, "Messenger of Allah, ask Allah to grant us victory over them, to give us their homes as spoils, and to lay their lands waste at our hands."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed for that."Then I struck the second blow," he continued, "and the cities of Caesar and what lies around them were raised up for me until I saw them with my own eyes."They said, "Messenger of Allah, ask Allah to grant us victory over them, to give us their homes as spoils, and to lay their lands waste at our hands."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed for that."Then I struck the third blow, and the cities of Abyssinia and the settlements around them were raised up for me until I saw them with my own eyes."At that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Leave the Abyssinians alone as long as they leave you alone, and leave the Turks alone as long as they leave you alone."
Nasai (3176) narrated it from Isa bin Yunus, who said, Damrah related to us, from Abu Zurah Saybani, from Abu Sakinah, a freed man, from a man among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, and he mentioned it. Abu Dawud (4302) also narrated it, from Isa bin Muhammad Ramli, from Damrah with his chain, limiting it to the wording, "Leave the Abyssinians as long as they leave you alone, and leave the Turks as long as they leave you alone."Its chain is hasan because of Damrah, who is Ibn Rabia Filastini, for he is hasan al-hadith. Abu Sakinah is the Homsi, said to be named Muhallam, and there is disagreement over whether he was a companion, as noted in Taqrib. Mizzi, however, said in his Tahdhib that he narrated from the Prophet ﷺ, and from a man who narrated from the Prophet ﷺ. Among those who narrated from him he mentioned Bilal bin Saad and Yahya bin Abu Amr Shaybani. However, the story of the Prophet's ﷺ seeing was not mentioned by Bukhari in the hadith of Jabir, because it does not meet his criteria, and it is a good addition. It is corroborated by the hadith of Bara bin Azib, narrated by Ahmad (18694), Abu Yaala (1685), and Abu Naeem in Dalail Nubuwwah (430), all of them through the hadith of Awf, from Abu Abdullah Maymun, from Bara, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered the digging of the trench. He said, a boulder appeared before us that the picks could not cut into, so they complained about it to the Prophet ﷺ. He said, he took the pick, and I think he said he set aside his garment, then struck a blow and said, "In the name of Allah," and broke a third of the boulder. Then he said, "Allah is greatest! I have been given the keys of Syria. I can see its red palaces from this very spot of mine." Then he said, "In the name of Allah," and struck another blow, breaking a third of it, and said, "Allah is greatest! I have been given the keys of Persia. By Allah, I can see the cities and its white palace from this very spot of mine." Then he said, "In the name of Allah," and struck another blow, breaking the rest of the stone, and said, "Allah is greatest, I have been given the keys of Yemen. By Allah, I can see the gates of Sanaa from this very spot of mine."Its chain is daif because of Abu Abdullah Maymun Basri Kindi, also said to be Qurashi, for he is daif by the agreement of the scholars. Yahya bin Main said, "He is nothing." Ahmad bin Hanbal said, "His hadiths are objectionable." Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators, and said, "Yahya Qattan held a poor opinion of him." However, Ibn Hajar graded its chain hasan in Fath al-Bari (7/397), and mentioned another corroborating account from the hadith of Kathir bin Abdullah bin Amr bin Awf Muzani, who said, my father related to me, from his father. Bayhaqi narrated it in Dalail (3/418), and in it, it states, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ marked out the trench in the year of the Confederates, and cut off forty cubits for every ten men.It also states, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went down into the trench with Salman, and we climbed up from the section on our side of the trench. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took the pick from Salman and struck the boulder a blow that cracked it, and a flash of light shone from it, illuminating the space between its two lava fields, meaning the two lava fields of Madinah, as though it were a lamp in the middle of a dark night. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then proclaimed a takbir of victory, and the Muslims proclaimed the takbir. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ struck it a second time, cracking it, and a flash of light shone from it, illuminating the space between its two lava fields, as though it were a lamp in the middle of a dark night. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ proclaimed a takbir of victory, and the Muslims proclaimed the takbir. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ struck it a third time, breaking it, and a flash of light shone from it, illuminating the space between its two lava fields, as though it were a lamp in the middle of a dark house. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ proclaimed a takbir of victory, and the Muslims proclaimed the takbir. Then he took Salman's hand and climbed up. Salman said, "By my father and mother, O Messenger of Allah, I have seen something I never saw before." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to the people and said, "Did you see what Salman is saying?" They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah, by our fathers and mothers, we saw you strike, and lightning flashed like waves, and we saw you proclaim the takbir, but we saw nothing else." He said, "You have spoken truly. When I struck my first blow, the flash you saw illuminated for me the palaces of Hirah and the cities of Khosrau, as though they were the fangs of dogs, and Jibreel informed me that my nation would prevail over them. Then I struck my second blow, and the flash you saw illuminated for me the red palaces of the land of the Romans, as though they were the fangs of dogs, and Jibreel, peace be upon him, informed me that my nation would prevail over them. Then I struck my third blow, and the flash from it that you saw illuminated for me the palaces of Sanaa, as though they were the fangs of dogs, and Jibreel, peace be upon him, informed me that my nation would prevail over them. So rejoice, victory shall reach them. Rejoice, victory shall reach them. Rejoice, victory shall reach them."The Muslims rejoiced greatly and said, "Praise be to Allah, a promise fulfilled, for Allah has promised us victory after the siege." Then the Confederates appeared, and the Muslims said, "This is what Allah and His Messenger promised us, and Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth, and it only increased them in faith and submission" [Ahzab 33:22].The hypocrites said, "Are you not amazed? He speaks to you and makes you dream, and promises you falsehood. He tells you that from Yathrib he can see the palaces of Hirah and the cities of Khosrau, and that they will be opened for you, while you are digging the trench and cannot even venture out!" Then the Quran was revealed, "And when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is disease said, Allah and His Messenger promised us nothing but delusion" [Ahzab 33:12].Kathir bin Abdullah bin Amr bin Awf Muzani is daif by the agreement of the scholars. There is another corroborating account, from Abdullah bin Amr bin As, to similar effect. Haythami said in Majma (6/131), "Tabarani narrated it through two chains. In one of them is Huyayy bin Abdullah, whom Ibn Main considered trustworthy while a group of scholars considered him daif, and the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the sahih."There is another corroborating account, from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had the trench dug, and his companions were tying stones to their bellies from hunger. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw this, he said, "Has anyone been shown someone who could feed us a meal?" A man said, "Yes." He said, "Well then, go ahead and show us to him." So they went to a man, and there he was in the trench, working on his portion of it. His wife sent word, saying, "Come, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has come to us." The man came running and said, "By my father and mother," and he had a young goat with its two kids. He leapt toward it, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "The kid is for our companions." So the kid was slaughtered, and his wife took some flour she had, kneaded it, and baked it, and she prepared and dressed it, and brought it near to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions. The Prophet ﷺ put his finger into it and said, "In the name of Allah. O Allah, bless it. O Allah, bless it. Eat."They ate from it until they were satisfied, and they had eaten only a third of it, with two-thirds remaining. So he sent those ten who were with him, saying, "Go, and send others to us so we may feed them." They went, and those ten others came in their place and ate from it until they were full. Then he stood and prayed for the lady of the house, and blessed her and her family. Then they walked on to the trench and said, "Let us go to Salman." There was a boulder before him that he had been unable to break. The Prophet ﷺ said to his companions, "Let me be the first to strike it," and he said, "In the name of Allah," and struck it, and a piece a third of it broke off. He said, "Allah is greatest, the palaces of Rome, by the Lord of the Kaaba." Then he struck again, and a piece broke off, and he said, "Allah is greatest, the palaces of Persia, by the Lord of the Kaaba." At that, the hypocrites said, "Here we are at a trench, and he promises us the palaces of Persia and Rome!"Tabarani narrated this in Kabir (11/376), from Abdullah bin Ahmad bin Hanbal, who said, Saeed bin Muhammad Jarmi related to me, Abu Thumaylah related to us, Nuaym bin Saeed Abdi related to us, that Ikrima narrated from Ibn Abbas, and he mentioned it. Haythami said in Majma (6/132), "Its narrators are the narrators of the sahih, except for Abdullah bin Ahmad bin Hanbal and Nuaym Abdi, who are both trustworthy." That is what he said, but I have not come across a biography of Nuaym bin Saeed Abdi, for he is not among the narrators in Taqrib, nor among those in Tajil, and Ibn Abu Hatim did not include him in Jarh wa Tadil, nor did Ibn Hibban in his Thiqat, so this needs verification. As for what was narrated from Sahl bin Saad Saadi, who said, I was with the Prophet ﷺ at the trench, and he took the mattock and struck with it, and it struck a stone, and he laughed. It was asked, "What made you laugh, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "I laughed at people who will be brought from the east, in shackles, being driven to Paradise." This is daif.Ahmad (22861) and Tabarani (5733) both narrated it through the route of Fudayl bin Sulayman, who said, Muhammad bin Abu Yahya related to us, from Abbas bin Sahl bin Saad Saadi, from his father, and he mentioned it. Fudayl bin Sulayman is Numayri Basri, daif by the agreement of the scholars. Nevertheless, Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators (7/316), and Bukhari cited him as a supporting narrator.
