He said, "We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the Trench. They were digging while we carried the soil on our shoulders. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'O Allah, there is no life but the life of the Hereafter, so forgive the Emigrants and the Helpers.'"
قال كنا مع رسول الله ﷺ في الخندق، وهم يحفرون ونحن ننقل التراب على أكتادنا، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: اللهم لا عيش إلا عيش الآخرة، فاغفر للمهاجرين والأنصار.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Military Expeditions (4098), and Muslim in the Book of Jihad and Expeditions (126:1804), both by way of Abdul-Aziz bin Abu Hazim, from his father, from Sahl bin Saad, who said, and then he related it.His statement "on our shoulder blades" uses the plural of "katad," with the first letter open and the second letter (the ta) carrying a kasrah, referring to the area between the shoulder area and the back. In Muslim's version, it appears as "akrafina" (our shoulders).The location of the trench was in the northwestern area of Madinah, because that side alone was exposed, unlike the other sides, which had palm trees, dense crops, mountains, and other natural barriers.
