Harith al-Ghatafani came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Muhammad, give us half the dates of Medina, otherwise we will fill it against you with cavalry and men."The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Let me first consult the two Saads," meaning Saad bin Ubada and Saad bin Muaz, intending to seek their counsel. The two said, "By Allah, we never accepted humiliation upon ourselves in the days of ignorance, so how could we accept it now that Allah has brought us Islam?"Harith returned, and the Prophet ﷺ informed him of their answer.Harith said, "You have betrayed me, Muhammad!"Then Hassan said,Harith, whoever among you betrays the covenant of his neighbor, know that Muhammad does not betray. If you betray, then betrayal is among your customs, and meanness grows at the roots of the sakhbar shrub. As for the trustworthiness of the Nahdi, wherever you find it, it is like glass, once cracked, it cannot be mended.Harith said, "Muhammad, hold back Hassan's tongue from us, for if it were mixed with the water of the sea, it would taint it."

Bazzar narrated it - Kashf Astar (1803) from Uqba bin Sinan, who said, Uthman bin Uthman Ghatafani narrated to us, Muhammad bin Amr narrated to us, from Abu Salama, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it. Bazzar said afterward, "We do not know of anyone who narrated it from Muhammad bin Amr in this manner except Uthman, and we have not heard it except from Uqba."Haythami said in Majma (6/132), Bazzar and Tabarani narrated it, and its wording is, from Abu Hurairah, who said, Harith Ghatafani came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Muhammad, share with us the dates of Madinah." He said, "Not until I consult the Saads." So he sent for Saad bin Muaz, Saad bin Ubada, Saad bin Rabi, Saad bin Khaythama, and Saad bin Masud, and said, "You know that the Arabs have shot at you all with a single bow, and that Harith has asked you to share with him the dates of Madinah. If you wish to fend him off this year of yours [as it stands here, though the correct reading may be 'until'] your command comes afterward." They said, "Messenger of Allah, is this revelation from the sky, in which case submission to Allah's command is due, or is it your own opinion or inclination? If it is your own opinion or inclination, we see fit to follow your inclination and opinion. But if what you really want is to spare us, then by Allah, we have seen ourselves and them as equal, and they get nothing from us except by purchase or as hospitality."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There, do you hear what they are saying?" They said, "You have broken your word, Muhammad."Then Hassan bin Thabit said,"O Harith, whoever among you betrays the trust of his neighbor,
Muhammad indeed does not betray.
The trust of the man of Murra, when I encountered it,
was like a broken bottle, its crack cannot be mended.
If you betray, then betrayal is among your customs,
and baseness sprouts in the roots of the sakhbar plant."The narrators of Bazzar and Tabarani both include Muhammad bin Amr, whose hadith is hasan, and the rest of his narrators are reliable. The sound and established account is that the Prophet ﷺ consulted the two Saads, namely Saad bin Ubada and Saad bin Muaz, as Ibn Ishaq stated. So it may be that Muhammad bin Amr, who is Ibn Alqama bin Waqqas Laythi Madani, got it right on one occasion and erred on another, since some of these men died before the Battle of the Trench and the campaign against Banu Qurayza.
