We were with Hudhayfah when a man said, "If I had met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I would have fought alongside him and exerted myself."Hudhayfah replied, "You would have done that? Let me tell you, I saw us with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the night of the Confederates. A fierce wind and bitter cold had taken hold of us, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Is there a man who will bring me news of the enemy, and be with me on the Day of Resurrection?' We remained silent, and none of us answered him. Then he said again, 'Is there a man who will bring me news of the enemy? Allah will place him with me on the Day of Resurrection.' We remained silent, and none of us answered him. Then he said, 'Is there a man who will bring me news of the enemy? Allah will place him with me on the Day of Resurrection.' We remained silent, and none of us answered him. Then he said, 'Get up, Hudhayfah, and bring us news of the enemy.' I had no choice when he called me by name, so I rose. He said, 'Go and bring me news of the enemy, and do not stir them up against me.'When I left him, it was as though I were walking in a warm bath, until I reached them. I saw Abu Sufyan warming his back by the fire. I placed an arrow on the bowstring, intending to shoot him, but I remembered the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, 'Do not stir them up against me.' Had I shot him, I would have hit him.So I returned, walking again as though through a warm bath. When I came to him, I gave him news of the enemy. As soon as I finished, I felt the cold, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ clothed me with the spare part of a cloak he had been wearing while praying. I kept sleeping until morning, and when morning came he said, 'Get up, you sleeper!'"
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Jihad and Expeditions (1788:99) from Zuhayr bin Harb and Ishaq bin Ibrahim, both from Jareer, from Amash, from Ibrahim Taymi, from his father (Yazid bin Sharik), who said, then he related it.His saying, "a severe cold wind" - qarr means cold. His saying, "as if I were walking in a bathhouse" means that he did not feel the cold that other people felt. Hammam (bathhouse) is derived from hamim, which is hot water.Bazzar narrated it - Kashf Astar (1809) - as did Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba - Matalib Aliyah (4273) - and Hakim (3/31), and from him Bayhaqi in Dalail (3/450), all of them through the hadith of Bilal Absi, from Huzaifa, who said, the people scattered away from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the night of the Confederates, so that no one remained with him except twelve men. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me while I was crouching from the cold, and said, "Ibn Yaman, get up and go to the camp of the Confederates and observe their condition." I said, "Messenger of Allah, by the One who sent you with the truth, I only rise for you out of shame" - because of the cold, he said, and the cold of the Harra and the cold of the salt marsh. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Go, Ibn Yaman, no harm will come to you from cold or heat until you return to me."He said, so I went until I reached their camp, and I found Abu Sufyan kindling a fire among a group of men around him, the Confederates having scattered away from him. I came and sat among them. Abu Sufyan sensed that someone had joined them from outside their group, so he said, "Let every man take hold of the hand of the one sitting beside him." He said, so I struck my right hand upon the man to my right and took his hand, and struck my left hand upon the man to my left and took his hand. I stayed among them a little while, then I got up and went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who was standing in prayer. He gestured to me with his hand to come closer, so I drew near to him until he let down over me part of the garment he was wearing to warm me. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer, he said, "Ibn Yaman, sit down and tell the people." I said, "Messenger of Allah, the people scattered away from Abu Sufyan, and no one remained except a group kindling a fire, and Allah, the Most High, has poured upon them cold like that which He poured upon us, but we hope from Allah what they do not hope."Hakim said, its isnad is sahih. Bazzar said, we do not know of it from Bilal, from Huzaifa, except through this isnad. Haythami said in Kashf Astar, the hadith of Huzaifa is found in the Sahih, but here there is additional material, including his statement that no one remained with him except twelve men, and his statement, "I only rise for you out of shame," and other additions.Ibn Hajar said in his commentary on Matalib Aliyah, this hadith is hasan, and its basis is found in the Sahih, but there are additions here that were heard from him.I say, Bilal bin Yahya Absi Kufi, there is no harm in him, as Ibn Main said, but his narration from Huzaifa is disconnected, as Yahya bin Main and others said, for he used to say, "It has reached me from Huzaifa." Given that his narration from Huzaifa is disconnected, his sole transmission of these additions cannot be accepted, though otherwise he is truthful and his hadith is hasan.Ibn Qattan said, he is trustworthy, he narrated from Huzaifa hadiths using the formula "an" without any mention of direct hearing in any of them, and Tirmidhi graded his hadith from Huzaifa as sahih, believing that he had heard from him. This story of Huzaifa was mentioned by the scholars of biography, military expeditions, and history in greater detail, including what Ahmad narrated (23334) from Yaqub, my father narrated to us, from Muhammad bin Ishaq, Yazid bin Ziyad narrated to me, from Muhammad bin Kaab Qurazi, who said, a young man of ours from the people of Kufa said to Huzaifa bin Yaman, and he related the story at length. In it there is an unnamed intermediary between Muhammad bin Kaab Qurazi and Huzaifa. As for Muhammad bin Kaab Qurazi, he did not meet Huzaifa. But there are other chains that strengthen it.Nuaym bin Masud bin Amir bin Ghatfan had a prominent role in sowing discord between Qurayza, Ghatfan, and Quraysh. He had embraced Islam but concealed his Islam from his people. He came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, I have embraced Islam, and my people do not know of my Islam, so command me as you wish." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You are but one man among us, so try to demoralize them if you can, for war is deception." Ibn Ishaq mentioned this in detail without an isnad, see Sirat bin Hisham (2/229-230), and most of the scholars of biography, military expeditions, and history have recorded it.As for the saying of the Prophet ﷺ, "War is deception," it is sahih and has been documented in its proper place. It has been said that the Prophet ﷺ spoke this phrase during the Battle of the Trench.
