I went in to see Hafsa while the locks of her hair were still dripping with water. I said, "The affairs of the people have turned out as you can see, and I have been given no share in this matter."She replied, "Go and join them, for they are waiting for you, and I fear that your staying away from them will cause division." She did not leave him alone until he went. When the people had gathered, Muawiya gave a sermon and said, "Whoever wishes to speak about this matter, let him raise his head and show himself to us, for we have a greater right to it than he does, and than his father."Habib bin Maslama said, "Why did you not answer him?"Abdullah replied, "I loosened my garment and was about to say, 'The one who has more right to this matter than you is the man who fought you and your father over Islam.' But I feared that I would utter a word that would split the unity of the community, cause bloodshed, and have my words carried back distorted. So I remembered what Allah has prepared in the Gardens of Paradise."Habib said, "You were guided and protected."Mahmud reported from Abdul-Razzaq with the wording wa-nuwasatuha.
Bukhari narrated it in Maghazi (4108), from Ibrahim bin Musa, who said, Hisham informed us, from Muammar, from Zuhri, from Salim, from Ibn Umar, and he related it.His saying, "nasawatiha" contains a transposition, and the correct form is "nawasatiha," meaning her locks of hair. The meaning of "tantifu" is that it drips, as though she had just bathed. His saying, "Something has happened among the people, as you can see" refers to the fighting that took place between Ali and Muawiya at Siffin. His saying, "so I undid my hibwa" the hibwa is a garment thrown over the back, with its two ends tied around the legs after drawing them together. His saying, "the one who fought you and your father away from Islam" his father was Abu Sufyan bin Harb, who was the leader of the confederate tribes on the day of the Trench.
