The Prophet ﷺ recited the words of Allah concerning Ibrahim, "My Lord, they have led astray many among mankind. So whoever follows me, he is of me" [Ibrahim 14:36]. He then raised his hands and said, "O Allah, my ummah, my ummah," and he wept.Allah
said, "Jibreel, go to Muhammad," though your Lord knows best, "and ask him what makes him weep."Jibreel
came to him and asked him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told him what he had said, though Allah knows best.Allah said, "Jibreel, go to Muhammad and say, 'We shall please you concerning your ummah and shall not grieve you.'"
Muslim reported it in the Book of Faith (202) from Yunus bin Abdul-Ala Sadafi, who said, Ibn Wahb informed us, who said, Amr bin Harith informed me, that Bakr bin Sawada narrated to him from Abdul-Rahman bin Jubayr, from Abdullah bin Amr, and he mentioned it.On this subject there are other narrations that are not sahih. Among them is what was reported from Ibn Abbas, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The prophets have pulpits of gold on which they sit." He said, "But my pulpit will remain, I will not sit on it nor take a seat on it, standing before Allah, my Lord, fearing that I might be sent to Paradise while my nation remains behind me. So I will say, 'O Lord, my nation, my nation.'" Then Allah will say, "O Muhammad, what do you wish Me to do with your nation?" So I will say, "O Lord, hasten their reckoning." So they will be summoned and their accounts reckoned. Some of them will enter Paradise by the mercy of Allah, and some of them will enter Paradise through my intercession. I will not cease interceding until I am given documents releasing men who had already been sent to the Fire, until even Malik, the keeper of the Fire, will say, "O Muhammad, out of your Lord's wrath toward your nation, you have left nothing in the Fire for vengeance."Tabarani reported it in Al-Kabir (10771), and Ibn Khuzayma in Tawhid (476), and Hakim (1/65), all of them through the route of Muhammad bin Thabit Bunani, from Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Harith bin Nawfal, from his father, from Abdullah bin Abbas, and he mentioned it.Hakim said, "This is a hadith with a sahih chain, except that the two shaykhs did not cite Muhammad bin Thabit Bunani as evidence, for he has little hadith material, though what he has is collected together, and this hadith is unusual among the reports concerning intercession, and the two of them did not report it." Dhahabi responded to him, saying, "More than one scholar has graded him daif, and the hadith is munkar." Haythami said in Al-Majma (10/380), "Tabarani reported it in Al-Kabir and Al-Awsat, and among its narrators is Muhammad bin Thabit Bunani, who is daif."I say, and it is as they both said, for Muhammad bin Thabit Bunani narrates from his father things that are not from his father's actual narration, as though there were another Thabit whose reports cannot be cited as evidence, nor can narration from him be relied upon despite how little of it there is, as Ibn Hibban said. See Al-Majruhin (925).On this subject there is also what was reported from Ibn Abbas in a lengthy hadith among the reports concerning the people of the standing place. Ahmad reported it (2546) from Affan, who said, Hammad bin Salama narrated to us, from Ali bin Zayd, from Abu Nadra, who said, Ibn Abbas addressed us from the pulpit of Basra and said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, and he mentioned it at length. In it is Ali bin Zayd, who is daif, and in the text there is an objectionable element, which is the statement of Isa
, "I am not fit for that, for I took a god besides Allah, and today nothing concerns me but myself." This is because in the sahih hadiths, no sin is mentioned for Isa
, and moreover, what is mentioned here is not even a sin on his part in the first place. On this subject there is also what was reported from Salman Farsi, except that it is mawquf. Ibn Abu Shayba reported it in Al-Musannaf (31026).As for his ﷺ statement in some of the hadiths, "My intercession is for every Muslim," it means, I intercede for all the Muslims at the outset, for the prophets, the martyrs, the righteous, and all the Muslims, so that Allah delivers them from the standing place in which they had been afflicted with the grief and distress that befell them in that station, so that Allah may judge between them and hasten their reckoning. Tawhid of Ibn Khuzayma (2/576).These hadiths and others, such as the hadith of Ibn Umar coming later, specifically concern the Prophet's ﷺ intercession for the people of the standing place so that judgment may be passed between them, which is the Praised Station mentioned in the chapter that follows this one. Then, after his ﷺ greatest intercession, there are other intercessions, such as bringing the people of Paradise into Paradise, bringing the people of monotheism out of the Fire, and his intercession for those of his nation who deserved the Fire so that they might not enter it.As for what is mentioned in the hadiths of this chapter regarding the intercessions at the standing place, and bringing the sinful people of monotheism from his nation out of the Fire, and other intercessions besides these, it appears that some narrators combined different hadiths and related them as a single continuous account, while some abridged from the beginning of the hadith and others abridged from its end.Ibn Khuzayma said in Tawhid (2/519), "The companions of the Prophet ﷺ would sometimes abridge the Prophet's reports when they narrated them, and sometimes they would relate the hadith in full, and sometimes the abridgment occurred after the report had already been given in full. Some listeners would memorize part of the report without memorizing the whole of it, and sometimes, after memorizing it, the Prophet's companion would forget part of the text. So when all the reports are gathered together, the whole of the text becomes known at that point." End of quote.
