Umar distributed some woolen garments among the women of Madinah, and one fine garment remained. Some of those present said to him, "Commander of the Believers, give this one to the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who is with you," meaning Umm Kulthum bint Ali, who was his wife.Umar replied, "Umm Salit has more right to it." Umm Salit was one of the women of the Ansar who had pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.Umar said, "She used to carry waterskins for us on the day of Uhud."
أنه قسم مروطا بين نساء من نساء أهل المدينة، فبقي منها مرط جيد، فقال له بعض من عنده يا أمير المؤمنين، أعط هذا بنت رسول الله ﷺ التي عندك، يريدون أم كلثوم بنت علي، فقال عمر: أم سليط أحق به، وأم سليط من نساء الأنصار ممن بايع رسول الله ﷺ، قال عمر: فإنها كانت تزفر لنا القرب يوم أحد.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Maghazi (4071), from Yahya bin Bukayr, who said, Layth (that is, Ibn Saad) narrated to us from Yunus, from Ibn Shihab, who said, Thalaba bin Abu Malik said that Umar bin Khattab distributed some garments... and he related the account.Umm Sulayt was the mother of Abu Saeed Khudri. She had been the wife of Abu Sulayt, who died before the Hijrah, and then Malik bin Sinan Khudri married her, and she bore him Abu Saeed. Ibn Hajar stated this in Fath al-Bari.
