On the day of Uhud, sixty-four men of the Ansar were killed, along with six of the Muhajirun, among them Hamza, and the enemy mutilated their dead. So the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If we ever have a day like this against the polytheists, we will go beyond what they did to us."Then, on the day of the conquest of Makkah, a man whose identity was not known called out, "After today there is no more Quraysh!"So the crier of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ announced, "Safety is granted to black and white alike, except for so-and-so and so-and-so," naming certain individuals. Then Allah revealed, "And if you retaliate, retaliate only to the extent that you were harmed. But if you are patient, that is certainly better for those who are patient" [Nahl 16:126].So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We will be patient and will not retaliate."
Reported by Tirmidhi (3129), and Abdullah bin Ahmad in the Musnad of his father (21230, 21229), and this wording is his, and Ibn Hibban (487), and Hakim (2/358–359), all of them through routes from Fadl bin Musa, who said, Isa bin Ubayd narrated to us, from Rabi bin Anas, from Abu Aliyah, from Ubayy bin Kaab, and he related it. In another version, "Hold back from the people except four." Tirmidhi said, hasan gharib from the hadith of Ubayy bin Kaab. Hakim said, sahih in isnad. Its isnad is hasan because of Isa bin Ubayd, who is Kindi, Abul-Munib, for his hadith is hasan. It also contains Rabi bin Anas, who is disputed, though his hadith is hasan.
