Kaab was the first to recognize the Messenger of Allah ﷺ after the defeat, when people were saying that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had been killed.Kaab said, "I recognized his eyes shining from beneath the helmet, so I called out at the top of my voice, 'Muslims, rejoice! This is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ!' He gestured to me to be silent."When they recognized the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they rose with him and made their way toward the mountain pass. With him were Abu Bakr and Umar, Ali, Talha, Zubayr, and Harith bin al-Simma, along with a group of Muslims. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was making his way up into the pass, Ubayy bin Khalaf caught up with him, saying, "Muhammad, may I not be saved if you are saved!"The companions said, "Messenger of Allah, shall one of us turn back to deal with him?"He replied, "Leave him to me."When Ubayy drew near, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took the spear from Harith bin al-Simma. Some of the people said, as was related to me, "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took it, he gave it such a shake that we scattered away from him the way hairs scatter from a camel's back when it shakes itself. Then he turned to face Ubayy and struck him with it a single thrust that sent him reeling repeatedly off the back of his horse."

Abu Naeem narrated it in Dalail (2/619–620) via Muhammad bin Maslama, from Muhammad bin Ishaq, who said, Ibn Shihab narrated to me, from Abdullah bin Kaab bin Malik, and he related it. Its chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ishaq, except for his statement, "Some of the people said, as was related to me..." for he did not provide a chain for this part.Ibn Abu Asim also related it in Jihad (253) through another route, from Muhammad bin Ishaq, from Ibn Shihab and from Asim bin Umar bin Qatada, from Abdullah bin Kaab bin Malik, from Kaab bin Malik, relating something similar. It also appears in Sirat bin Hisham (2/83), except that there is no mention of Abdullah bin Kaab in it, for he only said, "Ibn Shihab Zuhri related to me that Kaab bin Malik said," and then related the hadith. This shows that Ibn Hisham abridged Ibn Ishaq's chain of transmission in many places, and therefore caution and care must be exercised in judging a chain of transmission based on Sirat bin Hisham.
