The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on the day of Badr, "Whoever among you can capture any of the sons of Abdul-Muttalib alive, do so, for they came out unwillingly."
قال رسول الله ﷺ يوم بدر: من استطعتم أن تأسروا من بني عبد المطلب، فإنهم خرجوا كرها.
Imam Ahmad narrated it (676) from Abu Saeed, he said, Israil narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, from Haritha bin Mudarrib, from Ali, and he related it. Its chain is sahih.As for what Ibn Ishaq narrated, he said, Abbas bin Abdullah bin Mabad narrated to me, from some of his family, from Ibn Abbas, that the Prophet ﷺ said to his companions that day, "I know that some men from Banu Hashim and others have been brought out against their will, and they have no wish to fight us," and he mentioned among them Abu Bakhtari bin Hisham bin Harith bin Asad, and Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib. Abu Huzaifa said, "Are we to kill our fathers, our sons, our brothers, and our clansmen, and leave Abbas alone? By Allah, if I meet him I will strike him through with the sword." This reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he said to Umar bin Khattab, "Abu Hafs, should the face of the Messenger of Allah's uncle be struck with the sword?" Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, let me strike off his neck with the sword, for by Allah he has become a hypocrite." Abu Huzaifa used to say afterward, "I am not safe from that word I spoke that day, and I remain fearful because of it, unless martyrdom should atone for it on my behalf." And indeed he was killed as a martyr on the day of Yamama.This account is daif, for it contains men who are unknown.As for Abu Bakhtari, he was the most restrained of the people toward the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was in Makkah. He never harmed him, and nothing displeasing to him ever reached him from Abu Bakhtari. He was also among those who stood up against the document that Quraysh had written against Banu Hashim and Banu Muttalib. Mujaddar bin Ziyad Balawi, the ally of the Ansar, met him. Mujaddar said to Abu Bakhtari, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has forbidden us from killing you." Now Abu Bakhtari had a companion with him who had come out with him from Makkah, Junada bin Muleiha bin Zuhayr bin Harith bin Asad. Abu Bakhtari said, "And my companion?" Mujaddar said to him, "No, by Allah, we will not leave your companion. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us only concerning you alone." Abu Bakhtari said, "No, by Allah, then we shall both die together. Let not the women of Makkah say of me that I abandoned my companion out of eagerness to live."Then Mujaddar came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "By the One who sent you with the truth, I strove hard to make him surrender so that I might bring him to you, but he refused and would only fight me. So I fought him and killed him."
