"Nothing prevented me from being present at Badr except that I had set out together with my father Husayl, and the disbelievers of Quraysh seized us. They said, 'You intend to join Muhammad.'We replied, 'We do not intend that. We only intend Madinah.'So they took from us a solemn covenant with Allah that we would head straight to Madinah and not fight alongside him. We came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him what had happened.He said, 'Go on to Madinah. We will fulfill our covenant with them and seek Allah's help against them.'"
ما منعني أن أشهد بدرا إلا أني خرجت أنا، وأبي حسيل، فأخذنا كفار قريش قالوا: إنكم تريدون محمدا؟ فقلنا ما نريده، ما نريد إلا المدينة. فأخذوا منا عهد الله وميثاقه لتنصر فن إلى المدينة، ولا نقاتل معه. فأتينا رسول الله ﷺ فأخبرناه الخبر، فقال: انصرفا، نفي لهم بعهدهم، ونستعين الله عليهم.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Jihad (1787) from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba, who said, Abu Usama narrated to us, from Walid bin Jami, who said, Abu Tufayl narrated to us, who said, Huzaifa narrated to us, and he mentioned it.Husayl is the one known as Yaman, the father of Huzaifa bin Yaman. The name of Yaman was Husayl bin Jabir, and Yaman was a nickname. His father was called Husayl al-Yaman because he was descended from Yaman Jarwa bin Harith bin Qatia, and Jarwa bin Harith himself was also called Yaman. He was called Yaman because he had shed blood among his people, so he fled to Madinah and allied himself with Banu Abdul-Ashhal. His people then called him Yaman because he had allied with the Yamaniyya.Huzaifa, his father Husayl, and his brother Safwan were present at Uhud. One of the Muslims killed his father, thinking he was one of the polytheists, while Huzaifa was crying out, "My father, my father," but he was not heard.His saying, "The two of them went back," refers to the Battle of Badr. In it is a command to fulfill one's pledge, so that it does not become widely known among people that his companions broke their word, provided this does not involve the risk of destruction. But if a captive pledges not to flee and then senses that he is about to be killed, the majority of the scholars have said that he may flee and break the pledge.
