The Messenger of Allah ﷺ received news of Abu Sufyan bin Harb traveling with forty riders from Quraysh, all merchants returning from Sham. Among them were Makhrama bin Nawfal and Amr bin As. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called the Muslims to action and said to them, "This is Abu Sufyan returning with the merchandise of Quraysh. Go out for it, perhaps Allah will grant it to you as spoils."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Muslims set out. Some men hastened with him while others were slow to respond, since the call had only been for property they might capture, and they did not expect to meet an army. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out with three hundred and a few more riders, most of his companions being on foot. They had with them eighty camels and one horse, which some people claim belonged to Miqdad. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out sharing a single camel between himself, Ali, and Marthad bin Abu Marthad al-Ghanawi.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ departed through the pass of Banu Dinar from the lava field, heading toward al-Aqiq. The narrator mentioned his route, until when he reached Irq al-Zabya he met a man from the Bedouins. They asked him about the people but received no information from him. When Abu Sufyan drew near to the Hijaz, he was probing for news and asking about it until he obtained information from some riders. He then hired Damdam bin Amr al-Ghifari and sent him to Quraysh to call upon them to defend their wealth, informing them that Muhammad had set out to intercept it with his companions.Damdam set off swiftly until he arrived at Quraysh in Mecca. He said, "People of Quraysh, the laden caravan! Muhammad and his companions have set out to intercept it." The latima refers to the merchandise. "Help! Help! I do not think you can reach it in time."Quraysh said, "Does Muhammad and his companions think this will be like the caravan of Ibn Hadrami?" So they set out on every mount, swift and slow, and not a single one of their nobles stayed behind, except that Abu Lahab stayed back and sent As bin Hisham bin Mughira in his place. Quraysh went out numbering nine hundred and fifty fighters, leading two hundred horses with them, and they brought along singing girls who beat tambourines and sang verses mocking the Muslims.
Muhammad bin Ishaq narrated it from Muhammad bin Muslim Zuhri, Asim bin Umar bin Qatada, Abdullah bin Abu Bakr, and Yazid bin Ruman, from Urwa bin Zubayr and others among our scholars, from Ibn Abbas. Each of them narrated part of this hadith to me, and their narrations came together in what I have related of the hadith of Badr. Ibn Hisham (1/606-607).Bayhaqi narrated it in Dalail (3/31-32) from Yunus bin Bukayr, from Ibn Ishaq with his chain, except that he did not mention Ibn Abbas in his chain, and the wording given here is his. Its chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ishaq, for his hadith is hasan when he states his source clearly. On this subject there is also what was narrated from Abu Ayub Ansari, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said while we were in Madinah, "I have been informed about the caravan of Abu Sufyan, that it is approaching. Would you be willing to go out ahead of this caravan, so that Allah may grant us its spoils?" We said, "Yes." So he went out and we went out with him. When we had traveled a day or two, he said to us, "What do you think about fighting the people, for they have been informed of your departure?" We said, "By Allah, we have no strength to fight the enemy. We only wanted the caravan." Then he said again, "What do you think about fighting the people?" We said the same thing. Then Miqdad bin Amr said, "In that case, we will not say to you, Messenger of Allah, what the people of Musa said to Musa, "Go, you and your Lord, and fight. We will stay here" [Maidah 5:24]." He said, We, the group of Ansar, wished that we had said what Miqdad said, more than we would have wished for great wealth. So Allah revealed to His Messenger, "Just as your Lord brought you out of your home in truth, while indeed, a party among the believers were reluctant, disputing with you concerning the truth after it had become clear, as if they were being driven to death while they were looking on" [Anfal 8:5–6].Then Allah
revealed, "I am with you, so strengthen those who have believed. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieved, so strike above the necks and strike from them every fingertip" [Anfal 8:12]. And He said, "And remember when Allah promised you one of the two groups, that it would be yours, while you wished that the one without strength would be yours" [Anfal 8:7]. The one with strength meant the fighting men, and the one without strength meant the caravan. So when we were promised one of the two groups, either the fighting men or the caravan, our hearts were at ease. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a man to see what lay ahead of the people. He said, "I saw a dark mass, but I do not know what it was." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It is them, it is them. Come, let us count ourselves." So we did, and we found that we were three hundred and thirteen men. We told the Messenger of Allah ﷺ our number, and this pleased him, so he praised Allah and said, "That is the number of the companions of Talut."Then we came face to face with the people and formed our ranks. Someone among us rushed ahead of the line, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at them and said, "Stay with me, stay with me." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Allah, I call upon You to fulfill Your promise." Ibn Rawaha said, "Messenger of Allah, I wish to offer you some advice, though the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is too excellent to be advised, and Allah
is too great for you to call upon Him to fulfill His promise." He said, "Ibn Rawaha, I will indeed call upon Allah to fulfill His promise, for Allah does not break His promise."Then he took a handful of dust, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ threw it into the faces of the people, and they were routed. So Allah
revealed, "And you did not throw it, when you threw, but it was Allah who threw" [Anfal 8:17].We killed some and took others captive. Umar
said, "Messenger of Allah, I do not think you should have captives, for we are only callers and reconcilers of hearts." We, the group of Ansar, said, "What Umar has said is only driven by envy toward us." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ slept, and when he woke he said, "Call Umar for me." So he was called, and he said, "Allah
has revealed to me, "It has not been for a prophet to have captives until he inflicts a massacre in the land. You desire the commodities of this world, while Allah desires the Hereafter. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise" [Anfal 8:67]."Tabarani narrated it in Kabir (4/208-210) from Bakr bin Sahl, who said, Abdullah bin Yusuf told us, Ibn Lahia told us, from Yazid bin Abu Habib, from Aslam Abu Imran, who told him that he heard Abu Ayub Ansari say what has been related. In it is Ibn Lahia, whose memory was poor. So the statement of Haythami in Majma (6/73-74), "Tabarani narrated it and its chain is hasan," is not correct, because of Ibn Lahia.
