When the Prophet ﷺ was driven out of Mecca, Abu Bakr said, "They have driven out their Prophet. Truly, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. They will surely be destroyed."Then the verse was revealed, "Permission to fight is given to those who are being fought, because they have been wronged. And indeed, Allah is competent to give them victory" [Hajj 22:39].Abu Bakr said, "Then I knew there would be fighting."Ibn Abbas said, "This was the first verse revealed concerning fighting."
لما أخرج النبي ﷺ من مكة قال أبو بكر: أخرجوا نبيهم، إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون، ليهلكن فنزلت {أذن للذين يقتلون بأنهم ظلموا وإن الله على نصرهم لقدير} [الحج: ٣٩] فعرفت أنه سيكون فقال: قال ابن عباس: فهي أول آية نزلت في القتال.
Nasai (3085) — this is his wording — Tirmidhi (3171), and Ahmad (1865) reported it, and Ibn Hibban (4710) graded it sahih, via Ishaq bin Yusuf Azraq, who said, Sufyan told us, from Amash, from Muslim Batin, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, and he related it.Its chain of transmission is hasan, because of the disagreement over Amash, as Tirmidhi pointed out when he said, "This is a hasan hadith. More than one narrator has reported it from Sufyan, from Amash, from Muslim Batin, from Saeed bin Jubayr, as a mursal report, without the mention of 'from Ibn Abbas.'" End of quote.I say, as for Sufyan, there is disagreement over his report, as Tirmidhi indicated, but Shubah reported it from Amash with a connected chain, as found in Hakim (3/7-8), and Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs."
