When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came down to stay with me, I said, "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, I find it unbearable that I should be above you while you are below me."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "It is more convenient for me to be on the lower floor, because of the people who come to visit us."I once saw a jar of ours that had broken and its water spilled out. Umm Ayub and I got up with a velvet cloth, the only covering we had, and began soaking up the water with it, fearing that anything might reach the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that would harm him.
لما نزل علي رسول الله ﷺ قلت بأبي أنت وأمي: إني أكره أن أكون فوقك، وتكون أسفل مني، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: إني أرفق بي أن أكون في السفلى لما يغشانا من الناس فقد رأيت جرة لنا انكسرت، فأهريق ماؤها فقمت أنا وأم أيوب بقطيفة لنا ما لنا لحاف غيرها نشف بها الماء فرقا أن يصل إلى رسول الله ﷺ شيئا يؤذيه.

Reported by Hakim (3/460-461) from Abu Walid the Imam, who said, Muhammad bin Nuaym told us, Ishaq bin Ibrahim Hanzali told us, Wahb bin Jareer told us, my father told me, he said, I heard Muhammad bin Ishaq say, Yazid bin Abu Habib told me, from Marthad bin Abdullah Yazani, from Abu Umama Bahili, from Abu Ayub, and he related it.Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criterion of Muslim." I say, its chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ishaq.See Sirat bin Hisham (1/498, 499). The Prophet ﷺ first stayed on the lower floor of the house, and the reason, as stated, was to make things easier for himself, his companions, and those who came seeking him. But when Abu Ayub insisted and disliked that the Prophet ﷺ should be on the lower floor while he himself remained on the upper floor, he moved to the upper floor.In this there is a beautiful display of courtesy from Abu Ayub toward the Prophet ﷺ, which was particular to him and not shared by anyone else. As for the statement that revelation would come to him, it means that the angels and the revelation would come to him, as stated in the sahih hadith, "Indeed the angels are troubled by what troubles the sons of Adam."The Prophet ﷺ therefore always avoided eating garlic, because he expected the coming of the angels and the revelation at any moment. This restriction did not apply to others, for eating it is only disliked when one is about to attend the congregational prayer.The Prophet ﷺ remained in the house of Abu Ayub for about seven months.
