I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the market of Dhul-Majaz, wearing a red garment and calling out, "People, say there is no god but Allah and you will succeed!"A man was following him, pelting him with stones until his ankles and heels were bleeding, while shouting, "People, do not obey him, for he is a liar!"I asked, "Who is this?"Someone replied, "This is the young man of the clan of Abd al-Muttalib."I asked, "And who is the one following him and pelting him with stones?"He answered, "That is Abd al-Uzza, Abu Lahab."
رأيت رسول الله ﷺ في سوق ذي المجاز، وعليه حلة حمراء ويقول: يا أيها الناس قولوا لا إله إلا الله تفلحوا ورجل يتبعه يرميه بالحجارة، وقد أدمى عرقوبيه وكعبيه وهو يقول: يا أيها الناس، لا تطيعوه، فإنه كذاب. فقلت: من هذا؟ قيل: هذا غلام بني عبد المطلب. فقلت: فمن هذا الذي يتبعه يرميه بالحجارة؟ قال: هذا عبد العزى أبو لهب.
Ibn Hibban (6562), Nasai (55), and Hakim (2/611–612) all narrated it from the hadith of Yazid bin Ziyad bin Abu Jaad, from Jami bin Shaddad, from Tariq bin Abdullah Muharibi, who related it as part of a lengthy hadith. Its isnad is hasan because of Yazid bin Ziyad bin Abu Jaad.Ibn Ishaq and others mentioned that the Prophet ﷺ, after the death of Abu Talib, went out to Thaqif in Taif to call them to support him. When he became convinced they would not respond, he returned to Makkah and began presenting himself to the Arab tribes during the Hajj season. It is mentioned, through various chains, that he went to Kinda, Banu Kaab, Banu Huzaifa, Banu Amir bin Sasaa, and others, but none of them responded to what he asked of them.Musa bin Uqba reported from Zuhri, "During those years," meaning the years before the migration, "he would present himself to the tribes and speak to the chief of every people, asking nothing of them except that they support him and protect him. He would say, 'I do not compel any of you to do anything, rather I want you to protect me from whoever harms me, so that I may deliver the message of my Lord.'" Yet no one accepted this from him. Instead they would say, "This man's own people know him best."So the Prophet ﷺ grieved intensely over the polytheists for their refusal to believe, and Allah, the Exalted, spoke to console him, saying,"So perhaps you would kill yourself out of grief over their footsteps, sorrowful, if they do not believe in this narration" [Kahf 18:6]And He, the Exalted, said,"So do not let yourself perish over them in grief" [Fatir 35:8]And He, the Exalted, said,"And do not grieve over them" [Hijr 15:88]And He, the Exalted, said,"Perhaps you would kill yourself out of grief that they do not become believers" [Shuara 26:3]among other similar verses.
