Jabir bin Abdullah reported,

Jabir reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained in Mecca for ten years, following people to their dwellings at Ukaz and Majannah, and during the pilgrimage seasons at Mina, saying, "Who will give me shelter? Who will support me, so that I may deliver the message of my Lord, and Paradise will be his?"A man would come from Yemen or from Egypt, as he put it, and his people would meet him and say, "Beware of the young man of Quraysh, do not let him seduce you." He would walk among their men while they pointed at him with their fingers, until Allah sent him support from Yathrib. We gave him shelter and believed him. A man from us would set out, believe in him, and learn the Quran from him, then return to his family, and they would accept Islam through his Islam, until there was not a single household among the houses of the Ansar that did not contain a group of Muslims openly practicing Islam. Then we took counsel together and said, "How long shall we leave the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to be driven about the mountains of Mecca in fear?" So seventy men from among us travelled to him and met him during the pilgrimage season. We arranged with him to meet at the mountain pass of al-Aqaba, and we gathered there with him one by one and two by two until we were all assembled. We said, "Messenger of Allah, on what shall we pledge allegiance to you?"He said, "Pledge to me to listen and obey, in eagerness and in reluctance, to spend in hardship and in ease, to enjoin good and forbid evil, to speak the truth for Allah's sake without fearing the blame of any blamer, and to support me. When I come to you, you will protect me as you protect yourselves, your wives, and your children, and Paradise will be yours."We rose to him to pledge our allegiance, but Asaad bin Zurara, who was among the youngest of them, took his hand and said, "Slow down, people of Yathrib. We did not drive our camels hard to come here except knowing that he is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. To take him out today means breaking with all the Arabs, the killing of your best men, and being struck down by swords. Either you are a people who will endure this, with your reward being upon Allah, or you are a people who fear cowardice in yourselves. If so, make it clear, for that is more excusable for you before Allah."They said, "Step aside from us, Asaad. By Allah, we will never abandon this pledge, nor will we ever renounce it."So we rose to him and pledged our allegiance to him. He took our pledge and set conditions, and in return he granted us Paradise.
