Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "On the night I was taken on the night journey, when I awoke in Makkah I was deeply distressed about my situation, knowing that the people would deny me." So he sat apart from everyone, sorrowful.Then the enemy of Allah, Abu Jahl, passed by and came and sat down next to him. He said to him mockingly, "Has anything happened?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Yes."Abu Jahl asked, "What is it?"He said, "I was taken on a night journey last night."Abu Jahl asked, "To where?"He said, "To Bayt al-Maqdis."Abu Jahl said, "Then you woke up here among us this morning?"He said, "Yes."Abu Jahl did not show him that he was disbelieving him, fearing that the Prophet ﷺ would deny saying it once he called his people to hear it. He said, "Do you think that if I called your people, you would tell them what you told me?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Yes."So Abu Jahl called out, "Come, gathering of Banu Kaab bin Luayy!" And the gatherings broke up and they came until they sat down with the two of them.Abu Jahl said, "Tell your people what you told me."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I was taken on a night journey last night."They asked, "To where?"He said, "To Bayt al-Maqdis."They said, "Then you woke up here among us this morning?"He said, "Yes."Some of them clapped their hands and others placed their hands on their heads in astonishment at what they took to be a lie. They said, "Can you describe the masjid to us?" Among the people were some who had traveled to that land and seen the masjid.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I began to describe it, and I kept describing it until some of the description became confused for me. Then the masjid was brought and placed before me while I looked at it, set down near the house of Uqal," or "Aqeel," "and I described it while looking at it." He said, "Along with this there was a description I did not commit to memory."The people said, "As for the description, by Allah, he got it right."

عن ابن عباس قال

قال رسول الله ﷺ: لما كان ليله أسري بي، وأصبحت بمكة، فظعت بأمري، وعرفت أن الناس مكذبي. فقعد معتزلا حزينا. قال: فمر عدو الله أبو جهل فجاء حتى جلس إليه فقال له كالمستهزئ: هل كان من شيء؟ فقال رسول الله ﷺ: نعم. قال ما هو؟ قال: إنه أسري بي الليلة. قال: إلى أين؟ قال: إلى بيت المقدس. قال: ثم أصبحت بين ظهرانينا؟ قال: نعم. قال: فلم يره أنه يكذبه مخافة أن يجحده الحديث إذا دعا قومه إليه. قال: أرأيت إن دعوت قومك تحدثهم ما حدثتني؟ فقال رسول الله ﷺ: نعم. فقال: هيا معشر بني كعب بن لؤي، حتى قال فانتفضت إليه المجالس وجاءوا حتى جلسوا إليهما. قال: حدث قومك بما حدثتني. فقال رسول الله ﷺ: إني أسري بي الليلة. قالوا: إلى أين؟ قال: إلى بيت المقدس. قالوا: ثم أصبحت بين ظهرانينا؟ قال: نعم. قال: فمن بين مصفق ومن بين واضع يده على رأسه، متعجبا للكذب زعم! قالوا: وهل تستطيع أن تنعت لنا المسجد؟ وفي القوم من قد سافر إلى ذلك البلد ورأى المسجد. فقال رسول الله ﷺ: فذهبت أنعت، فما زلت أنعت حتى التبس علي بعض النعت. قال: فجيء بالمسجد وأنا أنظر حتى وضع دون دار عقال- أو عقيل- فنعته وأنا أنظر إليه. قال: وكان مع هذا نعت لم أحفظه. قال: فقال القوم: أما النعت فوالله لقد أصاب.
