Ayesha reported,

Ayesha said, "I never knew my parents to be anything other than people who followed the religion, and not a day passed without the Messenger of Allah ﷺ visiting us at both ends of the day, morning and evening. When the Muslims were persecuted, Abu Bakr left as an emigrant heading toward the land of Abyssinia. When he reached Bark al-Ghimad, he was met by Ibn al-Daghinah, the chief of the Qarah tribe.Ibn al-Daghinah asked, "Where are you headed, Abu Bakr?"Abu Bakr replied, "My people have driven me out, so I want to travel through the land and worship my Lord."Ibn al-Daghinah said, "A man like you, Abu Bakr, should not leave, nor should he be driven out. You earn for the destitute, you maintain ties of kinship, you bear the burdens of others, you are generous to the guest, and you help in matters of truth. I am your protector. Return and worship your Lord in your own town."So Abu Bakr returned, and Ibn al-Daghinah went with him. In the evening, Ibn al-Daghinah went around to the nobles of Quraysh and said to them, "A man like Abu Bakr should not leave, nor should he be driven out. Would you expel a man who earns for the destitute, maintains ties of kinship, bears the burdens of others, hosts the guest, and helps in matters of truth?"Quraysh did not reject Ibn al-Daghinah's protection, but they said to him, "Tell Abu Bakr to worship his Lord inside his own house. Let him pray there and recite whatever he wishes, but he must not disturb us with it nor display it openly, for we fear he may tempt our women and children."Ibn al-Daghinah conveyed this to Abu Bakr, and Abu Bakr stayed worshipping his Lord inside his house, not displaying his prayer openly nor reciting outside his home. Then it occurred to Abu Bakr to build a place of prayer in the courtyard of his house, where he would pray and recite the Quran. The women and children of the polytheists began to crowd around him, marveling at him and gazing at him. Abu Bakr was a man easily moved to tears, unable to control his eyes when he recited the Quran. This alarmed the polytheist nobles of Quraysh, so they sent for Ibn al-Daghinah, and he came to them. They said, "We granted Abu Bakr protection through your guarantee on the condition that he worship his Lord inside his house, but he has gone beyond that. He has built a place of prayer in the courtyard of his house and openly displays his prayer and recitation. We fear that he may tempt our women and children. Stop him. If he is willing to limit himself to worshipping his Lord inside his house, let him do so. But if he refuses anything except open display, then ask him to release you from your protection, for we are unwilling to violate your guarantee, and we will not consent to Abu Bakr displaying his worship openly."Ayesha said, "Ibn al-Daghinah came to Abu Bakr and said, 'You know the terms upon which I made my pact with you. So either you confine yourself to that, or you return my protection to me, for I do not wish the Arabs to hear that I have been violated regarding a man to whom I gave my guarantee.'Abu Bakr replied, 'I return your protection to you, and I am content with the protection of Allah عز وجل.'The Prophet ﷺ was at that time in Mecca, and he said to the Muslims, "I have been shown the place of your emigration. It has palm trees and lies between two stretches of black stones." So those who emigrated set out for Medina, and most of those who had emigrated to the land of Abyssinia returned to Medina. Abu Bakr also prepared to leave for Medina, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Take your time, for I hope I will be granted permission."Abu Bakr asked, "Do you really hope for that, may my father be your ransom?"He replied, "Yes."So Abu Bakr held himself back to accompany the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he fed two riding camels he had with leaves of the samur tree, that is, the foliage gathered from it, for four months.Ibn Shihab said that Urwa said that Ayesha said, "One day, while we were sitting in Abu Bakr's house at the hottest part of midday, someone said to Abu Bakr, 'Here is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ coming, with his face covered, at a time when he does not usually come to us.'Abu Bakr said, 'May my father and mother be his ransom. By Allah, he has not come at this hour except for some matter.'"She continued, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived and asked permission to enter, which was granted, and he came in. The Prophet ﷺ said to Abu Bakr, 'Have those with you leave.'Abu Bakr said, 'They are only your family, may my father be your ransom, Messenger of Allah.'He said, 'I have been given permission to depart.'Abu Bakr asked, 'Companionship with you, may my father be your ransom, Messenger of Allah?'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Yes.'Abu Bakr said, 'Then take, may my father be your ransom, Messenger of Allah, one of these two riding camels of mine.'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'For its price.'"Ayesha said, "We prepared their provisions in haste and packed food for them in a leather bag. Asma bint Abu Bakr cut a piece from her waist-belt and tied the mouth of the bag with it. For that she was called Dhat al-Nitaqayn, the One with the Two Belts."She continued, "Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr made their way to a cave in the mountain of Thawr, where they hid for three nights. Abdullah bin Abu Bakr would spend the night with them. He was a clever, quick-witted youth. He would slip away from them before dawn and arrive among the Quraysh in Mecca by morning, as if he had spent the night there. Whatever scheme he heard being plotted against them, he would memorize it, and he would bring them news of it as darkness fell. Amir bin Fuhayra, the freed slave of Abu Bakr, would graze a flock of milk-yielding sheep for them and bring them back at nightfall, after a portion of the evening had passed. They would spend the night with fresh milk from their flock, hot and warmed with stones, until Amir bin Fuhayra would call the flock away in the early dawn. He did this each night during those three nights. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr hired a man from Banu al-Dil, of Banu Abd bin Adi, as an expert guide. The khirrit is one skilled in guiding. He had taken an oath of alliance with the family of al-As bin Waail al-Sahmi and followed the religion of the disbelievers of Quraysh. They trusted him, handed over their two riding camels to him, and arranged with him to bring the camels to the cave of Thawr on the morning of the third night. So Amir bin Fuhayra and the guide set out with them, and the guide took them along the coastal route.
