News of the Prophet's ﷺ emigration reached us while we were in Yemen, so we set out as emigrants to join him. There was myself and two of my brothers, I being the youngest of them. One was Abu Burda and the other Abu Ruhm. We were among either a group of just over fifty, or fifty-three, or fifty-two men from my people. We boarded a ship, and our ship cast us ashore in the land of Najashi in Abyssinia. There we found Jafar bin Abu Talib and his companions already with him.Jafar said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us here and ordered us to stay, so stay with us."We remained with him until we all came together to the Prophet ﷺ, meeting him just when he had conquered Khaybar. He allotted us a share from it, or he said, he gave us a portion of it. He did not assign any share of it to anyone who had been absent from the conquest of Khaybar, only to those who were present with him, except for the companions of our ship along with Jafar and his companions, for he allotted shares to them along with the others.
بلغنا مخرج النبي ﷺ ونحن باليمن، فخرجنا مهاجرين إليه- أنا وأخوان لي أنا أصغرهم: أحدهما أبو بردة والآخر أبو رهم- إما قال في بضع وإما قال في ثلاثة وخمسين أو اثنين و خمسين رجلا من قومي، فركبنا سفينة، فألقتنا سفينتنا إلى النجاشي في الحبشة، ووافقنا جعفر بن أبي طالب وأصحابه عنده، فقال جعفر: إن رسول الله ﷺ بعثنا ها هنا، وأمرنا بالإقامة، فأقيموا معنا، فأقمنا معه حتى قدمنا جميعا، فوافقنا النبي ﷺ حين افتتح خيبر، فأسهم لنا- أو قال: فأعطانا- منها، وما قسم لأحد غاب عن فتح خيبر منها شيئا، إلا لمن شهد معه، إلا أصحاب سفينتنا مع جعفر وأصحابه، قسم لهم معهم.
Bukhari related it in the chapter on the obligation of khumus (313663) from Muhammad bin Ala, who said, our teacher Abu Usama narrated to us, Burayd bin Abdullah narrated to us, from Abu Burda, from Abu Musa, and he related it. He also related it in the chapter on virtues (3876) with the same chain, adding in it the saying of the Prophet ﷺ, "You, the people of the ship, have two migrations."Bayhaqi pointed to what is found in the Sahih after having declared the chain of Israil, from Abu Ishaq, sahih. He said, Abu Musa witnessed what took place between Jafar and the Negus, and so he reported it, but perhaps the narrator erred in saying, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to set out."After the migration of the Prophet ﷺ to Madinah, most of the migrants returned from Abyssinia to Madinah, while Jafar bin Abu Talib, Abu Musa Ashari, and their companions remained until the conquest of Khaybar in year 7.
