Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

The mockers were al-Walid bin al-Mughira, al-Aswad bin Abd Yaghuth al-Zuhri, al-Aswad bin al-Muttalib Abu Zamaa from the Banu Asad bin Abd al-Uzza, al-Harith bin Antala al-Sahmi, and al-As bin Waail. Jibreel عليه السلام came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ after he had complained about them.Jibreel showed him al-Walid, the father of Amr bin al-Mughira, and gestured toward his main artery. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What have you done?"Jibreel replied, "I have taken care of him."Then he showed him al-Aswad bin al-Muttalib, and Jibreel gestured toward his eyes.He asked, "What have you done?"Jibreel said, "I have taken care of him."Then he showed him al-Aswad bin Abd Yaghuth al-Zuhri, and gestured toward his head.He asked, "What have you done?"Jibreel said, "I have taken care of him."Then he showed him al-Harith bin Antala al-Sahmi, and gestured toward his head, or he said toward his belly. He asked, "What have you done?"Jibreel said, "I have taken care of him."Then al-As bin Waail passed by him, and Jibreel gestured toward the sole of his foot.He asked, "What have you done?"Jibreel said, "I have taken care of him."As for al-Walid bin al-Mughira, he passed by a man from Khuza who was feathering an arrow, and the arrow struck his main artery and severed it.As for al-Aswad bin al-Muttalib, he went blind. Some say he simply went blind in this manner, while others say that he sat down under an acacia tree and began calling out, "My sons, will you not defend me? I have been killed!" They kept replying, "We see nothing." He kept saying, "My sons, will you not protect me? I am perishing. Here it is, piercing my eyes with thorns!" They kept replying, "We see nothing." He continued in that state until both of his eyes were blinded. As for al-Aswad bin Abd Yaghuth al-Zuhri, sores broke out on his head, and he died from them.As for al-Harith bin Antala, jaundice took hold of him in his belly until it came out of his mouth, and he died from it.As for al-As bin Waail, while he was going about one day, a thorny plant entered his head and filled it until he died from it.Another narrator said in this same hadith that he rode to Taif on a donkey, and the donkey crouched down on a thorny plant, so a thorn pierced the sole of his foot and killed him.
