Yahya bin Urwa bin Zubayr reported,

Urwa bin Zubayr reported that he said to Abdullah bin Amr bin As, "What is the worst treatment you ever saw Quraysh inflict on the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when they were openly showing their hostility to him?"Abdullah replied, "I was present with them one day when their chiefs had gathered in the Hijr and began speaking about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They said, 'We have never endured anything like what we have endured from this man. He has called our judgment foolish, insulted our forefathers, found fault with our religion, split our community, and reviled our gods. We have borne a grave matter from him,' or words to that effect."While they were talking like this, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ suddenly appeared before them. He came walking until he touched the corner of the Kabah, then passed by them as he circled the House. As he passed, they taunted him with some of the things he had been saying. I could see the effect of it on his face. He went on, and when he passed them a second time they taunted him in the same way, and again I saw it in his face. He went on, and when he passed them a third time they taunted him again, so he said, 'Listen to me, people of Quraysh. By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, I have come to you with slaughter.'"His words gripped them so completely that not one man among them stirred, as though a bird had settled on his head. Even the one who had been harshest toward him before that began to soothe him with the finest words he could find, saying, 'Go on your way, Abu Qasim. Go on your way, rightly guided. By Allah, you were never ignorant.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ departed."The next day they gathered in the Hijr again, and I was with them. They said to one another, 'You spoke of all the harm he has done you and all that has reached you about him, yet when he confronted you openly with what you hate, you left him alone.'"While they were saying this, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ suddenly appeared before them. They sprang at him as one man and surrounded him, saying, 'Are you the one who says such and such?' referring to what had reached them of his criticism of their gods and their religion."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Yes, I am the one who says that.'"I saw one of them seize him by the gathered folds of his cloak. Then Abu Bakr Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, stood in front of him, weeping, and said, 'Would you kill a man merely for saying, My Lord is Allah?' [Ghafir 40:28] At that they left him. That was the harshest treatment I ever saw Quraysh inflict on him."
