I said to Abdullah bin Amr bin As, "Tell me the worst thing the polytheists did to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."He said, "While the Messenger of Allah was praying at the courtyard of the Kaabah, Uqba bin Abu Muayt came up, seized the Messenger of Allah ﷺ by his shoulder, and twisted his garment around his neck, choking him violently. Then Abu Bakr came, took hold of Uqba's shoulder, and pushed him away from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, saying, 'Would you kill a man simply because he says, My Lord is Allah, when he has brought you clear proofs from your Lord?' [Ghafir 40:28]."
قلت لعبد الله بن عمرو بن العاص: أخبرني بأشد ما صنع المشركون برسول الله ﷺ قال: بينا رسول الله يصلي بفناء الكعبة، إذ أقبل عقبة بن أبي معيط فأخذ بمنكب رسول الله ﷺ ولوى ثوبه في عنقه فخنقه خنقا شديدا. فأقبل أبو بكر فأخذ بمنكبه ودفع عن رسول الله ﷺ وقال: {أتقتلون رجلا أن يقول ربي الله وقد جاءكم بالبينات من ربكم} [غافر: ٢٨].
Bukhari related it in the Tafsir (4815) from Ali bin Abdullah, who said, Walid bin Muslim told us, Uzai told us, saying, Yahya bin Abu Kathir told me, saying, Muhammad bin Ibrahim Tamimi told me, saying, Urwa bin Zubayr told me, and he mentioned it.Yahya bin Urwa bin Zubayr also related it, from his father Urwa, in a longer wording than this, which follows.
