Abdullah bin Abbas reported,
Quraysh said to the Prophet ﷺ, "Call upon your Lord to turn Safa into gold for us, and we will believe in you."He asked, "Will you really do so?"They answered, "Yes."So he prayed, and Jibreel came to him and said, "Your Lord sends you greetings of peace and says to you, 'If you wish, I will turn Safa into gold for them, but whoever among them disbelieves after that, I will punish him with a punishment unlike any I have inflicted on anyone in all the worlds. Or if you wish, I will open for them the door of repentance and mercy.'"He said, "Rather, the door of repentance and mercy."

قالت قريش للنبي ﷺ ادع لنا ربك أن يجعل لنا الصفا ذهبا ونؤمن بك. قال: وتفعلون؟ قالوا: نعم، قال: فدعا، فأتاه جبريل فقال: إن ربك يقرأ عليك السلام ويقول لك: إن شئت أصبح لهم الصفا ذهبا، فمن كفر بعد ذلك منهم عذبته عذابا لا أعذبه أحدا من العالمين، وإن شئت فتحت لهم باب التوبة والرحمة، قال: بل باب التوبة والرحمة.
Imam Ahmad (3223, 2166), Bazzar in Kashf Astar (2224), Tabarani in al-Kabir (12736), Hakim (1/53), and Bayhaqi in al-Dalail (2/272) all narrated it through the route of Sufyan Thawri, from Salama bin Kuhayl, from Imran bin Hakam, from Ibn Abbas, who related it. Its isnad is sahih.Hakim said, This hadith is preserved from the hadith of Thawri, from Salama bin Kuhayl, and Imran bin Hakam Sulami is a major follower whose testimony is accepted. The two of them (Bukhari and Muslim) only left this hadith out, and Allah knows best, because of a disagreement that occurred through Yahya bin Salama bin Kuhayl regarding its isnad, and Yahya has many errors in narrating from his father.He then cited it through the route of Yahya bin Salama bin Kuhayl, from his father, from Imran bin Jaad, from Ibn Abbas, relating something similar, and said, This error does not weaken the hadith of Thawri, for I do not know of an Imran bin Jaad among the followers. Rather, Ismail bin Abu Khalid narrated from Imran bin Abu Jaad, and as for Imran bin Abu Jaad, he is among the followers of the followers. End of quote.On this subject there is also what has been narrated from Abu Umama, from the Prophet ﷺ, that he said, "My Lord offered to turn the valley of Makkah into gold for me. I said, No, my Lord, but let me be full one day and hungry one day, or he said three days or something like that, for when I am hungry I humble myself before You and remember You, and when I am full I thank You and praise You."This was narrated by Tirmidhi (2347) and Ahmad (22190), both from the hadith of Abdullah bin Mubarak, and it is found in his Zuhd (196, what Naeem bin Hammad added beyond Marwazi), from Yahya bin Ayub, who said, Ubaydullah bin Zahr narrated to us, from Ali bin Yazid, from Qasim, from Abu Umama, who related it.Its isnad is daif because of Ubaydullah bin Zahr and his teacher Ali bin Yazid Alhani, for both of them are daif by the agreement of the scholars. Therefore, the statement of Tirmidhi, "This is a hasan hadith, though Ali bin Yazid is considered daif in hadith," cannot be accepted.
