Abdullah bin Abbas reported,
The people of Makkah asked the Prophet ﷺ to turn Safa into gold for them and to move the mountains away from them so they could farm. He was told, "If you wish, you may give them more time, and if you wish, We will grant them what they asked. But if they then disbelieve, they will be destroyed just as those before you were destroyed."He said, "No, rather I will give them more time."So Allah 
revealed this verse, "Nothing prevented Us from sending signs except that the former peoples denied them. We gave Thamud the she-camel as a clear sign, but they wronged her. And We send signs only to instill fear." [Isra 17:59]

Sahihعن ابن عباس قال
سأل أهل مكة النبي ﷺ أن يجعل لهم الصفا ذهبا، وأن ينحي الجبال عنهم، فيزرعوا. فقيل له: إن شئت أن تستأني بهم، وإن شئت أن نؤتيهم الذي سألوا. فإن كفروا أهلكوا كما أهلكت من قبلكم قال: لا، بل أستأني بهم فأنزل الله عز وجل هذه الآية: {وما منعنآ أن نرسل بالايت إلآ أن كذب بها الأولون وءاتينا ثمود الناقة مبصرة فظلموا بها وما نرسل بالايت إلا تخويفا} [الإسراء: ٥٩].
Ahmad (2333), Bazzar in Kashf Astar (2225), Hakim (2/362), and Bayhaqi in Dalail (2/271) all narrated it, all through the hadith of Jareer bin Abdul-Hameed, from Amash, from Jafar bin Iyas, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, who related it. Its isnad is sahih. Hakim said, "Its isnad is sahih."Concerning the words of Allah Almighty, "And nothing prevented Us from sending the signs" [Isra 17:59], the meaning is that We send the signs they requested, for fear that they would not believe even after the signs had come. It is Allah's established practice that whoever fails to believe after the signs come will be punished with a severe punishment, just as He said, narrating the request of the disciples of the Messiah for the table spread from heaven, "Allah said, 'I will send it down to you, but whoever among you disbelieves after this, I will punish him with a punishment I will not inflict on anyone else in all the worlds'" [Maidah 5:115].Likewise, He said, narrating about Thamud when they asked for the sign, a she-camel to emerge from a rock they had chosen. Salih called upon his Lord, and a she-camel emerged from it just as they had requested. "But they wronged her", meaning they disbelieved in Allah who had created her. So he said to them, "Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three days. That is a promise that will not be broken" [Hud 11:65]. The Prophet ﷺ, out of mercy for them, chose to grant them a delay.
