I went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on one of the hot days of Mecca, and he had me riding behind him. With us was a sheep we had slaughtered and prepared, which we had placed in a food-cloth. Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl met him, and each greeted the other with the greeting of the pre-Islamic era.The Prophet ﷺ said, "Zayd," meaning Zayd bin Amr, "why is it that I see your people are angry with you?"He replied, "By Allah, Muhammad, this is not because of any blood-feud I have with them. Rather, I went out searching for this religion until I came to the rabbis of Khaybar. I found them worshipping Allah while also associating partners with Him, so I said, 'This is not the religion I seek.' Then I went out until I came to the rabbis of Sham, and I found them worshipping Allah while also associating partners with Him, so I said, 'This is not the religion I seek.' One of them said to me, 'You are asking about a religion that we know of no one practicing in worship of Allah except an old man in al-Jazira.' So I went out until I came to him. When he saw me, he said, 'All those you have seen are astray. Where are you from?' I said, 'I am from the people of the House of Allah, from the people of polytheism and the qaraz tree.' He said, 'What you seek has appeared in your land. A prophet has been sent, and his star has risen.' I have not learned anything more since then, Muhammad."Then he brought the food-cloth near him and asked, "What is this?"He replied, "A sheep we slaughtered for one of these idols."He said, "I would never eat anything slaughtered for other than Allah." Then they parted.Zayd bin Haritha said, The Prophet ﷺ came to the House, and I was with him, and he circumambulated it. By the House were two idols, one of brass, one called Isaf and the other Naila. Whenever the polytheists circumambulated, they would touch them. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not touch them, for they are filth."I said to myself, "I will surely touch them to see what he says." So I touched them.He said, "Zayd, did I not forbid you?"Then revelation came down upon the Prophet. Zayd bin Amr died, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "He will be raised on the Day of Resurrection as a nation by himself."
Bazzar related it in his Musnad (1331), Nasai in Kubra (8132), Abu Yaala (7212), Tabarani in Kabir (5/86), and Hakim (3/54), all of them through various routes from Muhammad bin Amr, from Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf and Yahya bin Abdul-Rahman bin Hatib, from Usama bin Zayd, from his father Zayd bin Haritha, who said, then he mentioned it. Its chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Amr bin Alqama, for he is hasan al-hadith.Dhahabi said in Siyar (1/222), "In its chain is Muhammad" (meaning Ibn Amr bin Alqama), "who cannot be relied upon, and in part of it there is clear objectionable content." This is as he said, except that this objectionable element, namely his statement, "a sheep we slaughtered for an idol," is refuted by what we explained in the Book of Hunting and Slaughtered Animals, in the chapter on the prohibition of slaughtering for something other than Allah. I mean that the sheep belonged to Quraysh, who slaughtered it and presented it to the Prophet ﷺ, but he refused to eat from it, so the Prophet ﷺ gave it to Zayd bin Amr, believing that he still followed the customs of Quraysh.Muhammad bin Amr is Ibn Alqama, about whom there is disagreement, but he is hasan al-hadith when the objectionable element is removed from his narration, and this is one such case. His statement, "What is it that I see your people have come to hate you for," means, they have come to detest you. It is said, "shanifa lahu shanafan," when someone comes to hate another. And his statement, "that is not out of any deficiency on my part toward them," means, not out of any diminishing of them on my part. It is said, "watarahu yatiruhu tiratan," when he diminishes him, like "waada yaidu iddatan."
