The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I did not witness any pact among Quraysh except the Pact of the Perfumed Ones, and I would not wish, even for a herd of fine camels, that I had broken it."He said, the Perfumed Ones were Hashim, Umaya, Zuhrah, and Makhzum.
قال رسول الله ﷺ: ما شهدت من حلف قريش إلا حلف المطيبين، وما أحب أن لي والنعم، وإني كنت نقضته قال: والمطيبين: هاشم وأمية وزهرة ومخزوم.

Ibn Hibban (3474) and Bayhaqi in Sunan al-Kubra (6/366) and in Dalail (2/38) narrated it through the route of Mualla bin Mahdi, who said, Abu Awana narrated to us, from Amr bin Abu Salama, from his father, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned it. Its isnad is hasan, due to some discussion regarding Amr bin Abu Salama, though he is hasan al-hadith.Muhammad bin Nasr said, "Some of those knowledgeable about biographies and the events of history said that his statement in this hadith, 'the alliance of the Tayyibin,' is a mistake, and that it is rather the alliance of Fudul. This is because the Prophet ﷺ did not witness the alliance of the Mutayyibin, for that occurred long ago, before he was born by a long span of time." Bayhaqi mentioned this.I say, others among the people of knowledge have said the same. Qutaybi said, "I think he meant the alliance of Fudul, because the Mutayyibin were the ones who formed the alliance of Fudul." Bayhaqi also mentioned this.Ibn Hibban said, "In these two reports there is an implied 'min' (meaning 'from'), intending, 'I witnessed something from the alliance of the Mutayyibin,' because he ﷺ did not witness the alliance of the Mutayyibin, since the alliance of the Mutayyibin occurred before the birth of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Rather, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ witnessed the alliance of Fudul, and they were among the Mutayyibin."Bayhaqi said, after presenting the hadith, "This is how this explanation was narrated, inserted into the hadith, and I do not know who said it. Some of the biographers claimed that he meant the alliance of Fudul, since the Prophet ﷺ did not witness the alliance of the Mutayyibin."Ibn Kathir said, "There is no doubt about this. Quraysh formed an alliance after the death of Qusayy, and they disputed over what Qusayy had assigned to his son Abd al-Dar, namely the water-provision, the food-provision, the banner, the assembly house, and the guardianship of the Kaaba. The sons of Abd Manaf disputed this with them, and tribes from Quraysh rallied to each side, and they formed alliances pledging support to their respective factions. The companions of the sons of Abd Manaf brought forth a bowl containing perfume, and they placed their hands in it and swore their alliance. When they rose, they wiped their hands on the corners of the House, and so they were named the Mutayyibin, as mentioned previously. This occurred long ago. However, what is meant by this alliance is the alliance of Fudul, which took place in the house of Abdullah bin Judan, as narrated by Humaydi, from Sufyan bin Uyayna, from Abdullah, from Muhammad and Abdul-Rahman, the two sons of Abu Bakr, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I indeed witnessed in the house of Abdullah bin Judan an alliance that, were I invited to it in Islam, I would respond. They pledged to restore what was taken unjustly to its rightful owners, and that no wrongdoer should be given precedence over the wronged.'"They said, the alliance of Fudul took place twenty years before the Prophetic mission, in the month of Dhul-Qaidah, and it occurred four months after the War of Fijar, since the Fijar took place in Shaban of that same year. The alliance of Fudul was the most honorable and noble alliance ever heard of among the Arabs.Bidayah wa Nihayah (2/291)
