A man called out to another at al-Baqi, "Abu Qasim!" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned toward him, and the man said, "Messenger of Allah, I did not mean you. I was only calling so-and-so."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "Take my name, but do not take my kunya."In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ was in the marketplace.
نادى رجل رجلا بالبقيع يا أبا القاسم فالتفت إليه رسول الله ﷺ فقال: يا رسول الله إني لم أعنك، إنما دعوت فلانا فقال رسول الله ﷺ: تسموا باسمي ولا تكنوا بكنيتي. وفي رواية: أن النبي ﷺ كان في السوق.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Business Transactions (2121), and Muslim in the Book of Manners (1:2131), both through the route of Humayd from Anas, who said, then he mentioned it.As for the other narration, Bukhari related it in the Book of Business Transactions (2120) and in the Book of Virtues (3537) from Adam bin Abu Iyas and Hafs bin Umar, both from Shubah, from Humayd, with the same wording.
