I set out to complain about Ala bin Hadrami to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I passed through Rabadhah, where I came upon an elderly woman from Banu Tamim who had been stranded there. She said, "Abdullah, I have a need to bring before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Will you take me to him?"So I carried her along, and we arrived in Madinah. There I saw black banners raised.I asked, "What is going on with the people?"They replied, "He intends to dispatch Amr bin As on an expedition."I sat down until he was finished. Then he entered his home, or his lodging. I sought permission to see him, and he granted it. I went in and sat down. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked me, "Was there some incident between you and Tamim?"I said, "Yes. We gained the upper hand over them. On my way, I passed through Rabadhah and found an elderly woman from them who had been stranded. She asked me to bring her to you, and here she is at the door."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ permitted her to enter, and she came in.I said, "Messenger of Allah, place a barrier between us and Tamim."The old woman became animated and settled herself comfortably, then said, "Where will you drive your displaced ones, Messenger of Allah?"I said, "I am just as the saying goes, a goat that carried its own death! I brought this woman not realizing she would become my adversary. I seek refuge in Allah and His Messenger from being like the envoy of Aad!"He asked, "And what is the envoy of Aad?"I said, "You have asked the right person." He was drawing the story out of me.I said, "Aad suffered a drought, so they sent three men as envoys. One of them stopped with Bakr, who served him wine for a month while two singing-girls called the Jaradatan entertained him. He then went out to the mountains of Mahrah and called out, 'O Allah, I have not come for a sick man to cure him, nor for a captive to ransom him. O Allah, give Aad to drink as they once drank!'Clouds passed by him, and a voice called out from them, 'Take it as fine ash that will leave none of Aad alive!'"He said, "And the woman would say, 'Do not be like the envoy of Aad!'"When they spoke about them concerning the wind, Messenger of Allah, only as much was sent against them as would pass through my ring.Abu Waail said, "That is how it reached me."
Tirmidhi (3274), Ahmad (15954), and Tabari in his Tafsir (10/276), this being his wording, all narrated it through the route of Zayd bin Hubab, who said, Sallam Abu Mundhir Nahwi narrated to us, saying, Asim narrated to us, from Abu Waail, from Harith bin Yazid Bakri, who said, then he narrated it.Ibn Majah (2816) narrated it in abridged form through another route, from Asim, from Harith bin Hassan, dropping Abu Waail from the chain, though the correct version includes him. Its chain is hasan because of Asim bin Bahdala, for his hadith is hasan.Hafiz said, regarding the words of Allah Almighty, "and that He destroyed the first Aad" [Najm 53:50], "This suggests that there was another Aad. Ahmad narrated the story of the second Aad with a hasan chain from Harith bin Hassan Bakri," then he mentioned it.Hafiz bin Kathir said, "This passage may refer to the destruction of the latter Aad, because it mentions Makkah, which was not built until after Ibrahim, the friend of Allah, settled Hajar and her son Ismail there. Then Jurhum settled among them, whereas the first Aad came before the friend of Allah." Bidayah wa Nihayah (1/298).
