The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A man once carried wine with him on a ship to sell, and he had a monkey with him. Whenever he sold the wine, he would mix it with water and then sell it. The monkey grabbed the money pouch and climbed up the mast, then began tossing one Dinar into the sea and one Dinar onto the ship until he had divided it between them."
Ahmad narrated it (8055, 9282) through two routes from Hammad bin Salama, who said, our teacher told us, Ishaq bin Abdullah, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned it. Its chain is sahih. In the second narration, Hammad bin Salama had doubt about whether it was raised to the Prophet, but the doubt is removed by the certainty. Bayhaqi also narrated it in Shuab (4/333) through another route from Hammad bin Salama with his chain, without the doubt. He also narrated it through two other chains. The first is through Sulayman bin Arqam, from Hasan, from Abu Hurairah, and he weakened it because of Sulayman bin Arqam. The second is through Ahmad bin Mulaib bin Hayan, who said, Salih bin Ishaq told us, Yahya bin Kathir Kahili told us, and Salih said, he was trustworthy and there was no harm in him, Hisham told us, from Ibn Sirin, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned it. Except that it has "fox" instead of "monkey."Perhaps this is one of the errors of Yahya bin Kathir Kahili, since there is disagreement about him. Abu Hatim said, he is a shaykh. Ibn Hibban listed him among the trustworthy narrators. Nasai said, daif.I say, the hadith of someone like him is deemed hasan when it comes in corroborating narrations, and it is strengthened when narrated through another route. As for Salih's statement, he was trustworthy, perhaps he meant by it to confirm that his teacher was Yahya bin Kathir Kahili the Kufan, the trustworthy one, not Yahya bin Kathir Basri, the daif one by consensus of the scholars. This is what I have concluded to be most likely. As for Ibn Hajar, in his Tahdhib, in the biographical entry on Yahya bin Kathir Kahili, he expressed doubt as to whether Salih's statement was indeed said about Yahya bin Kathir Kahili.
