I saw Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl standing with his back leaning against the Kaabah, saying, "People of Quraysh, not one of you today follows the religion of Ibrahim except me."He used to save the buried girls. Whenever a man intended to kill his daughter, Zayd would say to him, "Wait, do not kill her. I will take care of her expenses for you." So he would take her, and when she grew up, he would say to her father, "If you wish, I will hand her over to you, and if you wish, I will continue to provide for her."
رأيت زيد بن عمرو بن نفيل قائما مسندا ظهره إلى الكعبة يقول: يا معشر قريش، ما منكم اليوم أحد على دين إبراهيم غيري، وكان يحيي الموؤودة، يقول للرجل إذا أراد أن يقتل ابنته: مهلا، لا تقتلها، أنا أكفيك مؤونتها، فيأخذها فإذا ترعرعت قال لأبيها: إن شئت دفعتها إليك، وإن شئت كفيتك مؤونتها.
Ibn Saad narrated it in his Tabaqat (3/380), and Hakim in Mustadrak (3/440), both of them through the route of Abu Usama, Hammad bin Usama, from Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, from Asma, and he mentioned it. Hakim said, sahih according to the standard of the two Shaykhs, but they did not include it. Bukhari also narrated it in Manaqib Ansar (3828) as a suspended narration from Layth, who said, "Hisham wrote to me, from his father," relating it similarly.His saying, "other than me," is according to his own knowledge, for otherwise the Prophet ﷺ was also, before his mission, upon the religion of Ibrahim.
