Naji reported that he had a storage pile of dates that kept decreasing. One night he stood guard over it, and suddenly there appeared a creature resembling a young man who had reached puberty. Naji greeted him with peace, and the creature returned the greeting.Naji asked, "What are you, a jinn or a human?"He replied, "A jinn."Naji said, "Give me your hand."So he extended his hand, and behold, it was the hand of a dog, and his hair was the hair of a dog.Naji said, "Is this how the jinn are created?"The jinn answered, "The jinn know that there is no man among them stronger than I."Naji asked, "What brought you here?"He replied, "We heard that you love giving charity, so we came to get some of your food."Naji asked, "What can protect us from you?"He said, "This verse in Surah al-Baqarah, 'Allah, there is no god but He, the Living, the Self-Sustaining' [Baqarah 2:255]. Whoever recites it in the evening is protected from us until morning, and whoever recites it in the morning is protected from us until evening."When morning came, Naji went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him what had happened. The Prophet ﷺ said, "The wicked one spoke the truth."
Bukhari reported it in Tarikh al-Kabir (27/1), and Tabarani in Mujam al-Kabir (169/1), both from the hadith of Musa bin Ismail Tabuzaki, from Abu Aban bin Yazid Attar, from Yahya bin Abu Kathir, from Hadrami bin Lahiq, from Muhammad bin Ubayy bin Kaab, from his father, that he had a threshing floor, and he mentioned the story. This is a sahih chain of transmission, and Muhammad bin Kaab had a sighting of the Prophet.Ibn Hibban reported it (784) from the hadith of Walid, who said, Uzai narrated to us, Yahya bin Abu Kathir narrated to us, saying, the son of Ubayy bin Kaab narrated to me, that his father informed him, and he mentioned the hadith in similar fashion. Here the mention of the son of Ubayy bin Kaab came unspecified, and perhaps he is Muhammad, as in the earlier narration. In some of the narrations it is mentioned that he was Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Kaab. And Allah, the Exalted, knows best.
