Whenever the Prophet ﷺ saw a cloud that promised rain in the sky, he would pace back and forth, going in and coming out, and his face would change. Then, when the rain fell, his distress would leave him. Ayesha pointed this out to him, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "I do not know, perhaps it is as a people once said, 'Then when they saw it as a dense cloud advancing toward their valleys, they said, This is a cloud bringing us rain. No, it is what you were impatient for, a wind carrying a painful punishment'" [Ahqaf 46:24].
كان النبي ﷺ إذا رأى مخيلة في السماء أقبل وأدبر ودخل وخرج وتغير وجهه، فإذا أمطرت السماء سري عنه فعرفته عائشة ذلك فقال النبي ﷺ: ما أدري لعله كما قال قوم: {فلما رأوه عارضا مستقبل أوديتهم قالوا هذا عارض ممطرنا بل هو ما استعجلتم به ريح فيها عذاب أليم} [الأحقاف: ٢٤].
Bukhari narrated it in the Beginning of Revelation (3206), and Muslim in the Rain Prayer (899:15), both through the route of Ibn Jurayj, from Ata bin Abu Rabah, from Ayesha, and she related it. This is the wording of Bukhari, and Muslim related it at greater length than this, with an addition in his version saying, "When the wind blew fiercely he would say, 'O Allah, I ask You for its good, the good within it, and the good it was sent with, and I seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil within it, and the evil it was sent with.'" Then he mentioned it in a manner similar to the wording of Bukhari.In another version narrated by both of them, "I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughing so heartily that I could see his uvula, he only ever smiled." She said, "And whenever he saw clouds or wind, that could be recognized on his face."Bukhari narrated it in the tafsir (4828, 4829), and Muslim in the Rain Prayer (899:16), both through the route of Abdullah bin Wahb, from Amr bin Harith, from Abu Nadr, from Sulayman bin Yasar, from Ayesha, and she related it.
