The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Once the wealth of Bahrain comes to us, I will give you this much, and this much, and this much," gesturing with both hands together. The Prophet ﷺ passed away before the wealth of Bahrain arrived. When it later came to Abu Bakr, he ordered a caller to announce, "Whoever had a promise or a debt owed to him by the Prophet ﷺ should come forward."So I stood up and said, "The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Once the wealth of Bahrain comes to us, I will give you this much, and this much, and this much.'"Abu Bakr scooped up a handful for me once, then said, "Count it."I counted it, and it came to five hundred.He said, "Take twice as much again."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: لو قد جاءنا مال البحرين لقد أعطيتك هكذا وهكذا وهكذا وقال بيديه جميعا، فقبض النبي ﷺ قبل أن يجئ مال البحرين، فقدم على أبي بكر بعده، فأمر مناديا، فنادى من كانت له على النبي ﷺ عدة أو دين فليأت، فقمت فقلت: إن النبي ﷺ قال: لو قد جاءنا مال البحرين أعطيتك هكذا وهكذا وهكذا فحثي أبو بكر مرة ثم قال لي: عدها فعددتها فإذا هي خمسمائة فقال: خذ مثليها.
Bukhari reported it in the Book of Fard al-Khumus (3137), and Muslim in the Book of Virtues (2314: 60), both of them through the route of Sufyan bin Uyayna, who said, Muhammad bin Munkadir narrated to us, he heard Jabir bin Abdullah saying... and he mentioned it. And through the route of Sufyan bin Uyayna, from Amr bin Dinar, from Muhammad bin Ali, from Jabir, and he mentioned it. The wording given here is Muslim's.His statement, "The Prophet ﷺ passed away before the wealth of Bahrain arrived," does not contradict the hadith of Anas that follows, because that wealth was jizyah, and it used to arrive one year after another.See Fath al-Bari (1/517).
