Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Jizya and Truce (3162) from Adam bin Abu Iyas, who said, Shuba narrated to us, who said, Abu Jamra narrated to us, who said, I heard Juwayriyah bin Qudama Tamimi mention it. This is how Bukhari related it in abbreviated form. Imam Ahmad narrated it (362) from Muhammad bin Jafar, from Shuba with his chain, in a longer form. This is its text.From Juwayriyah bin Qudama, who said, I performed the hajj and came to Madinah in the year that Umar was struck. He said, Umar delivered a sermon and said, "I saw as if a red rooster pecked me once or twice" (Shuba was unsure which). Then it happened that he was stabbed, and permission was given for people to enter upon him. The first to come in were the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, then the people of Madinah, then the people of Syria, then permission was given to the people of Iraq, and I entered among those who entered.He said, Whenever a group came in to see him, they would praise him and weep. He said, When we entered upon him, his belly had been bound with a black turban and blood was flowing. We said, "Advise us." No one else had asked him for advice besides us. He said, "Hold fast to the Book of Allah, for you will never go astray as long as you follow it." We said again, "Advise us." He said, "I advise you concerning the Muhajirin, for people will increase while they will grow fewer. I advise you concerning the Ansar, for they are the stronghold of Islam to which it took refuge. I advise you concerning the bedouin Arabs, for they are your root and your source of sustenance. And I advise you concerning the people of your protective covenant, for they are the trust of your Prophet and the provision of your dependents. Now rise and leave me."He said, He did not add anything beyond these words for us. Muhammad bin Jafar said, Shuba said, I asked him about this again afterward, and he said regarding the bedouin Arabs, "I advise you concerning the bedouin Arabs, for they are your brothers and the enemy of your enemy."That is the end of it. However, Bukhari also narrated, through other chains, Umar bin Khattab's charge in the Book of Zakat (1392) and in the Book of the Virtues of the Companions (3700) and other places, in a fuller and longer form than this.
