Najdah al-Haruri, when he revolted during the strife of Ibn Zubayr, sent a message to Ibn Abbas asking him about the share allotted to the close relatives of the Prophet, to whom did he consider it belonged?Ibn Abbas replied, "It belongs to us, the close relatives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ apportioned it to them. Umar offered us something which we considered less than our right, so we refused to accept it."What he offered them was that he would help with the marriage expenses of those among them seeking to marry, settle the debts of those in debt, and give to the poor among them, but he refused to give them more than that.
Abu Dawud (2982), Nasai (4133), and Ahmad (2941) narrated it through two routes from Yunus, from Zuhri, from Yazid bin Hurmuz, who related it. The wording given here follows Nasai and Ahmad, and its chain is sahih. The essence of the hadith is found in Muslim (1812), mentioned in the chapter "The slave and the woman are given a share from the spoils."Nasai (4134) also narrated it through the route of Muhammad bin Ishaq, from Zuhri, and Muhammad bin Ali, from Yazid bin Hurmuz, who said, "Najdah wrote to Ibn Abbas asking him about the share of the near relatives, to whom does it belong?" Yazid bin Hurmuz said, "I myself wrote Ibn Abbas's letter to Najdah. I wrote to him, 'You ask me about the share of the near relatives, to whom does it belong? It belongs to us, the people of the House. Umar invited us to let him marry off our unmarried women from it, provide for our needy from it, and settle the debts of our debtors from it, but we refused, insisting instead that he hand it over to us entirely, and he refused that, so we left it with him.'" This narration contains Ibn Ishaq's use of "an" without specifying direct transmission, and he is known to practice tadlis. It has been narrated from Abu Zubayr that he said, Jabir bin Abdullah was asked, "How did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ deal with the khumus (fifth)?" He said, "He would give a man's share of it toward the cause of Allah, then another man's share, then another man's."This was narrated by Ahmad (14932), Ibn Abu Shayba (33994), and Abu Ubayd in al-Amwal (815), all of them from Affan, who said, "Abdul-Wahid narrated to us, saying, 'Hajjaj narrated to us, saying, "Abu Zubayr narrated it"'" as related above. This Hajjaj is Ibn Artah, who is truthful but frequently errs and practices tadlis. Although he explicitly stated that he heard it directly, he alone transmitted from Abu Zubayr, and no one else corroborated him on the wording of this hadith. It is well known that the Prophet ﷺ used to spend from the khumus on his household and on the pressing needs of the Muslims.
