Saad said, "Four verses of the Quran were revealed concerning me. I came upon a sword and brought it to the Prophet ﷺ.I said, "Messenger of Allah, award it to me as my share of the spoils."He said, "Put it down."Then he stood up, and the Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Put it back where you took it from."Then he stood up again and said, "Award it to me, Messenger of Allah."He said, "Put it down."So he stood up once more and said, "Messenger of Allah, award it to me. Am I to be treated like a man who has no worth?"The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Put it back where you took it from."He said, "Then this verse was revealed, "They ask you about the spoils of war. Say, the spoils belong to Allah and the Messenger" [Anfal 8:1].
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Jihad and Expeditions (1748:34) via Muhammad bin Jafar, who said, Shubah narrated to us, from Simak bin Harb, from Musab bin Saad, from his father, and he related it.Abu Dawud said, following the aforementioned hadith (2740), the reading of Ibn Masud was, "They ask you about the spoils."
