We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Khaybar, and we gained no gold or silver as spoils, only goods such as clothing and household items. Rifa bin Zayd gifted to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a black slave named Midam. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then headed toward Wadi al-Qura. When we reached Wadi al-Qura, while Midam was unloading the saddle of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a stray arrow struck him and killed him. The people said, "Congratulations to him, he has attained Paradise."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Not at all. By the One in whose hand my soul is, the cloak he took from the spoils of Khaybar before they were distributed is now blazing upon him as fire."When the people heard this, a man came to the Prophet ﷺ with a sandal strap, or two sandal straps, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "A strap of fire," or "Two straps of fire."
Malik narrated it in Jihad (25) from Thawr bin Zayd Deeli, from Abu Ghayth Salim, the freedman of Ibn Mutee, from Abu Hurairah, who related it. Bukhari narrated it in Maghazi (4234), and Muslim in Iman (115), both by way of Malik through the same chain.Bukhari's wording at the beginning is, "We conquered Khaybar, and we did not take gold or silver as spoils. We only took cattle, camels, goods, and orchards. Then we set off with the Messenger of Allahﷺ toward Wadi Qura, and with him was a slave of his called Midam..." the rest of the hadith follows.
